Hey all,
I have a 97 Ultra SPX, at the end of last year it started acting up. It would idle fine and run great for about a mile, then it would start bogging down and die. I put it away without finding the problem. I took it out this year and it fired right up. I let it idle for a bit then shut it down. Now it won't start. I pull the plugs and they're soaked. I am getting spark at all three plugs. I pulled the plugs and cleared out as much gas from the cylinders as I could, then tried again to no avail. Any ides???

you could have a bad stator, your getting spark, but that spark could weaken under compression. i would also check all your fuel lines, make sure there are no cracks in them.

Sounds to me like a fuel problem.
When it idled, was it idling fine?
Would it rev up good?
When it started acting up, could you rev it up and clear it out?
Guess I'm trying to get a little more info.

remove airbox and check for restrictions.....clean carbs or take it(them) to someone that knows how. Put in new plugs when trying again. You may have some sticking needle and seats, but usually if they start they will run ok until you shut it down. Then it will start real hard.
Also how old is the fuel and could it be contaminated? Sounds like your getting fuel of some sort but running out of air, compression, or spark.
did you just pull it over to clear out the fuel? under the exhaust y pipe you will see 3 plugs (one for each cyl.)at the bottom of the crankcase. pull each and see if fuel pours out. If you get much you may be washing your compression do to too much fuel.
Is gonna be a process of elimination. Start with the obvious and work to the not so.

Needle and seats, like DODGER indicated above. Brass seats and Steel needles, something has to wear out

I had the problem that you said you had the end of last year, and it was clogged pilot jets causing it. Clogged pilot jets is a fairly common problem because they are so small. I might be at least part of your problem.
I would clean the carbs, replace the needles and seats (fairly inexpensive), and then go from there.

Thanks for all the input.
It started acting up out of no where, was on a trail ride, prolly 20 miles or so in, then it started bogging. I was able to rev it up and get it going at first, but then it just stayed boggy, and eventually just died. The thing that really confuses me is that it started right up the other day, and now, nothing. I pulled the exhaust pipes today, and they were full of gas, also had to pull the plugs cause the cylinders were full of gas & it wouldn't pull over. After that I tried starting it again, to no avail. Plugs, again, were soaked. Seems like this thing is just completely flooding itself out. Any way this could be reeds?? any other ideas? Carbs are a pain in the @ to get to, plus I don't know a whole lot about carbs. I have rebuilt carbs before, just worried about making sure they're in sync if I start messing with em. Thinking about replacing the coils to see if that helps.

Have to rebuild those carbs buddy, pay attention to the choke plunger, pilot and main jets, seats for wear. Not a huge deal rebuilding carbs, plus you will need to remove crankcase bolts to let Gas out

Coils are the wrong way to go.....turn the gas shut/off off. Pull the plugs in the crankcase as I described above...get that fuel out of your crankcase...Get the carbs rebuilt for Gods sake. Remove the airbox and it is easy to get to the carbs. I would replace all needles and seats unless you want to tear it down again.
Why would you want to mess with coils when you say it has good spark

very true. main jets are rarely clogged because they are so big. many people dont know where the pilots are because they way down inside that tube.
pilot jets are responsible for idling and the first 1/3 of throttle. if pilots are clogged, sled wont want to even start because it cant idle.

100% positive it's your carbs... You're floats are sticking, that's why your pipe is full of gas. Clean the carbs out, you'll be happy you did!!

Thanks alot for the help everyone. I'm in the process of tearing down carbs. I drained the gas from the crankcase under two of the cylinders, but can't get to the third plug yet(it's behind the water pump) there was a ton of gas in there. Gonna replace needles & seats. Only odd thing i found was the middle carb had a 390 jet, the other two had 380's. These should all be jetted the same, right? I'm also gonna replace the fuel pump since it's easy to get at now & they're cheap. I'm also gonna clean up & re-paint the rust covered pipes.
Again, Thanks for the help.

Pictures would be cool, as I just started sanding my pipes down. I haven't painted them yet. But like to see other ultra's.

now your heading the right direction.
the jets may be different for many reasons. Buy a 380 install it and the first couple of rides check the plugs a few times each ride. Compare the middle to the others....
