Picked up a 97 RXL and it looks like it had pipes at one time. Chip in ECU is a PSI650ST. Can I run this chip with the stock exhaust?

No!! Well on second thought, I wonder if the 'st' stands for stock? Maybe a performance chip for stock exhaust? Call psi just to make sure. You could try sending an email but anytime someone needs info from psi you can only get it by calling.

I had sent am email to PSI but decided to call as GotMud had said. I did get an answer from them stating that it will run rich with the stock exhaust and would be best if I put a stock chip back in. So, I guess I am in the market for a 97 stock chip. Will other years work or will I need the exact year? Also how do the performance chips you see on ebay perform, anyone had any experience with them?

Anyone need a PSI650ST EFI chip?

The "performance chips" on ebay, are resistors in a plastic box, and don't do anything but fool a sensor. They might be good for a few hp, or they may fry your engine. Not 30+ hp!!!

I have the 91 code, and the 95 code. Either will work on your motor, although reputedly the 91's have more horsepower.

I will burn you a chip for either, in exchange for your other chip.

am I correct in assuming the later programming was enriched to provide for more durability? I also know that the exhaust expansion chamber was changed when the chip was changed. My 95 does not sound near as cool as my 91 did. I think some porting changes were made also although I am not sure. The 91 RXL came with the EC65PL-03 and the 95 RXL with the EC65PL-05 . Do you think it is wise to run a 91 chip with the later RXL?

Back when I first started researching the RXL EFI I read about them a lot.. Everything I could, including several other forums besides this one.

In many threads replacing the ECU was brought up, and almost every recommendation was, that if they had a choice of years to replace their ECU with, to replace it with a 91 because the 91's had the best performance. And no threads had people coming back screaming that they'd fried their engines.

Having looked at both the 91 and 95 maps, there are some minor differences.. I believe there were 3 (out of 256) locations with minor enrichment changes (at idle speeds) on the main fuel map, and 2 other maps. And the associated code that read those maps was changed, but I never finished disassembling the 95.

As far as the ECU's themselves, the only difference I've seen is that the later models have the big a$$ cap inside the ECU instead of connected to the diagnostic plug. I'm assuming that is because people kept losing them, and CPU's like smooth power so the ECU's were puking.

Having both rom's to play with on FrankenStorm, I've personally found the '91 to start, run, tune, and sound, considerably better. (making the exact same changes)

But you've been working on them since the dark ages. Haven't you ever thrown the wrong chip/ECU in one when you were in a hurry?
