Here is the background, a new company came in a purchased Inco (a mining company), the company was Brazil based Vale. Wages are $28-32/hr + bonus based off the nickel price, DB pension after 30 years service which is $3300 a month, and medical benefits (prescriptions paid and such). Vale signed an agreement with the Canadian government which was supposed to protect the community to make it a "net benefit to Canada" They have laid off, not paid many contractors, all kinds off stuff not good for the community, and the government is now protecting the company saying they can't release the agreement.
Now the guys are on strike because the company is trying to take away the DB pension for a very bad DC pension, change the nickel bonus to pay out less, and all kinds of stuff.
