Let me start off then, just about to pickup a 1999 xlt special, electric start, extralite tripple. Issue know at time of sale is fuel getting dumped into the cylinder.. Sounds to me like a carb issue. I will take all suggestions and hints. I hope to pick this up friday and then can take pics and pics of the carbs. AS I could not explain then to Ugly poo kid on the phone. But I am thinking that will be the issue.
Thanks to all info here.

There is only one reason that happens, that's because the needle/seat is not closing. The 2 causes for that, are stuck float, and bad/dirty needle/seat..
You should have it fixed by saturday. (if not friday night)

Thinking I'm going to put a 136 under my xc 600. got the skid and think got the belt from fellow SF member. Question is how long should I extend my tunnel? I've got a few old chassis around here and was thinking I would cut the back and rivot it into mine for the extention...

I just did my '96 Ultra. I went 10" from the end of the tunnel to the mount surface of the mud flap. That dimension is along the top of the tunnel at the existing angle. If you increase the tunnel angle at the extension you will obviously have to go further.
If you can't run with the big dogs, stay on the porch.
If there is any choice, overpower the problem rather than trying to finesse it. In poker, one Smith and Wesson beats four aces. In engineering, one positive fix beats four probables.

Well those side plates are 3/16" 6061-T6 aluminum, which is overkill for a tunnel extension, and are held by three 1/4" bolts on each side through the existing tunnel stiffeners. I figured I'd be able to put those holes in the side plates without loosing too much strength lol. I moved the original mud flap mount back and that will be riveted in place (that is what the vise grips are holding in the picture). The top of the extension is .065" aluminum sheet that will be riveted at the original mud flap mount location, along the side plates, and then riveted in the back to the mud flap mount. All the rivets are 1/4" steel. At the end I will weld a 1 ¼” aluminum tube for a bumper/handle. The only thing underneath will be the wiring and clamps for the LED taillight. Overall it should be a fairly robust design.
If you can't run with the big dogs, stay on the porch.

I was wondering the same thing. Anyways, My dad's 92 RXL, I was riding it with my friends and lost a lot of power, I took out the spark plugs hoping it just needed a new plug, but the spark plug in the middle cylinder had little peices of the piston in it that looked like little pebbles. How much money do you think this will be to fix? (I havn't had time to take it apart and see what it looks like yet) And if I fix it, I was thinking it might not be worth it, because I don't want it to happen again. But I just remembered, my sled stopped running the day before, and my dad towed me back on the RXL, and it seemed like his sled was working pretty hard. It got really loud and when we got back we realized the exhaust blew off right at the engine. He would have towed me with his exhaust off for about 5 mins, do you think this is why the piston went?
Sorry about the long explanation, and thanks for any answers.

If anyone is interested in a 97 Ultra motor pm me. It comes with carbs, throttle cables, cdi, coils, water pump, and recoil. It pulled about 128 across all 3 holes cold. Also have parts from 2 agressive chassis sleds.

If you fried a piston like that, your probably going to have to split the cases and clean all of the pieces of piston out. It is very possible you took out some bearings on the crank so if you can split your own cases you can do anything pretty cheaply.

No posts for 60 days, and threads automatically get locked. That's why I bumped the manuals thread mid summer.
I missed the original triple thread, and it got locked in June ot July. Quote originally posted by weakeboarderboy

Yes, there's a good chance that the exhaust separating caused damage that caused that piston to blow..
I'd rebuild it (or have it done) and be careful when you get it back until you're sure that it's ok. Also replace the injector boots while you have it out..

Also, if it has the green carb slides, they need to be updated to the newer black ones or you will be rebuilding the top end in addition to to replacing them. They crack and break off entering the engine and taking out pistons. cost for updated slides is approx. $70 apiece from dealer and that is the only place to get them. Take it from me, I learned the hard way.

No skiis and no wheels. I have a tunnel, bulkhead, and bellypan from a 96 XCR 600 SP, 2 rear skids, one is 8 inch and the other is Xtra 10, 2 good seats, 96 XCR 600 SP hood and windsheild and headlights, and tripple pipes and silencer off the ultra.

Just about time to start working on the sleds here in Michigan, snow will be here soon. My 97 XCR600se/800 needs a few things to be ready to ride.

Got a question about needle and seat. Do they just go out like right now or do they gradually leak more and more?
Reason I ask, last time I had the sled running (about a week ago), started and ran perfect. Just the other day it wouldn't start and found out the crankcase was full of gas. There was a temp increase of about 20 deg. from last time and am thinking maybe the tank somehow got pressurized and pushed gas past the needles.

I would say the temp increase had alot to do with it. They don't normally just go bad. Usually they tend to leak over time.

Frequently used as a term of derision by non-woodburners who mock the presence of loose bark and other wood waste in the beds of their pickup trucks.
