I know,... my first post on the site and I'm probably opening a can of worms. I know most of you will be biased to whatever you own/ love but I'm honestly looking for some educated advice here. They're running some vintage classes for the first time this year in my area during the same events as the big boys. Same course minus the big air jumps so there will be lots of tight corners, some moguls etc. So I'm thinking I don't need all out speed here but a combo of quick, light, lots of bottom end for launching out of corners and of course excellent handling. Rules say must be leaf spring front end and basically stock. I'm thinking '81 or '84 El Tigre 6000, Yamaha SRX, Skidoo RV, or maybe something a little more exotic if available / affordable. I'm also looking for something with a fairly reliable reputation. What do you guys think? Pros/ cons/ suggestions?

Any help would be greatly apreciated.

the 75 sno jets and the later 76-77 kawi/ sno jets have excellent chassis and suspensions for sno cross. probably the best suspension travel you will find in the late 70's also had great engines yamaha fan and free air engines. cant go wrong. good high stand up bars and tapered tunnel.

if the rules require leaf spring then your choices are less, please give us a rundown of rules and regulations - sounds like a freakin blast!!! My first "real sled" was a 1981 yamaha 440 exciter. bullet proof motor, and everything else for that matter - I rode the snot out of it, I was 14 and had a strong back/body from windsurfing and sking - the back thing I mention because bottoming will be a problem unless the rules allow some flexability in shocks or at least springs. I managed to keep up with the other guys just fine, if you can put a front ski widening kit on it this will help a bunch, the stock track sucked but it must have been light because this thing would go pretty good. It also fit in the back of my 1985 ford pickup long bed! I would highly recomend one. I have also heard great things about the SRX'x but never owned one.

1998 XC700 CERAMIC COATED STOCK PIPE, MANIFOLD & CAN, VFORCE REED/INTAKES, MCB CUSTOM NEEDLES, #40 PILOTS, 182 MAINS, STOCK GEARING, HYMARK ROLLER SECONDARY, MCB CLUTCH COMPONENTS, COMPLETE GRAPHICS CONVERSION, LOTS OF BLACK WITH XCR PACKAGE- I HATE WHITE SLEDS. 112 ON GPS LAST YEAR!!!

If you could find an 80's kawasaki Invader 440 that would be a great sled. A family friend of ours has one (piped and clutched of course) and the thing runs like a bat outta hell. Only problem is that it doesn't hook up very well, are you allowed to use studs?
