yes it does, more air-less air. I've seen it done many time difference is usually 10-20 psi.

I tried it on my ultra motor with the carbs taped off and then I took the tape off and held it wide open and I didnt see a 1 psi difference.

I honestly dont think it matters what oil you use for break in. And yes, you want OVER 120 psi. I always rebuild if it goes under 110-115 in either cylinder. Maybe you used an aftermarket ring, or put something in that wasn't supposed to be in? You didnt reuse pistons or rings did you? Sometimes your piston can get wear spots which allow the ring to set wrong, and lets air through. I've been told you have to hold it WOT when you check compression ( which I rarely do anyways )
I honestly don't think you know what really happens during break in.

Runs like a champ, first pull 99% of the time even when cold. I just tested my jag that had 145 psi compression and it only had 112. Im starting to think that the tester has gone bad.
Bad gauge. Just invest in a decent one...you'll use it for many, many years.
Quote originally posted by barney
Holding it wide open when pulling does not affect how the compression checker will read.
Look how much area there is for air to come through with the slides closed. Yea, that flows just as good as wide open

so if you hold the throttle open while doing a compression test the gauge will read higher or lower than with out any throttle?

If the throttle is closed it cannot suck as much air, so the compression reading will be lower.

I know and that makes sense and thats why I tried it both ways. It is a cheapo tester I got on sale at a auto value so that could have something to do with it.

**** off. You think I would lie to the people reading this thread?
You really wanna know that I think?
I think you'd be an idiot to tape off your carbs and do a compression test.
I think you'd be an even bigger idiot to tell anyone else you did it.
And I think you'd be talking out your a$$ saying that the results are no different than having WOT..

Hey, it's what my compression tester said. The motor was sitting on the shelf so I taped off the carbs so **** wouldnt get in them. I forgot to take the tape off and did a compression test. Then I thought that the motor wasnt getting air and I could get higher numbers if I took the tape off and held it wide open. The compression numbers didnt change. EDITED

So...
To do a compression test on a motor that was sitting on a shelf, you put it all the way into a chassis? (this is an assumption because : a - it's kind of hard to get a good pull on the rope with the motor sitting on the shelf, and b - takes 2 hands to hold throttle cable WOT if you don't have it in a throttle block so you have no hands to pull the rope, and c - usually motors on shelves don't have pull-handles on the ropes)
And in all the time it took to do that, you never thought to pull the tape off the carbs?
Not taking the tape off, means you could not have looked behind the tape to keep from sucking whatever was behind it into the motor. As well as possibly sucking a piece of tape into the motor. With workmanship like that, I can understand why you wouldn't see a change by taking the tape off.
Remind me to never let you work on anything of mine.

Ok, EDITED but since I am stronger than an 8 year old girl I can actually pull the motor over fast without it being in a chassis. Pull throttle cables with one hand and pull with my right hand. And I doubt I would pull a peice of tape in the motor because the motor isnt sucking all that much air when you are pulling it over. And lots of air enters from the exaust ports.

just bore it out dont hone it when u hone it theres still little scraches in the cylinder wall depending on how bad u blew up ur sled ive rebuild my xc 500 7 times and the one time we bored it out it ran like a raped ape for 2 years then blew up again for some ****in reason so yeah man do it right and when i break in my sled i dont go over 60 mph for the first 150 200 miles just to make sure everything is seated and put the oil u use in ur sled and pour a few ounces in there to make sure its rich for the first tank of gas and rejet ur sled one size up

Isn't the hone SUPPOSED to leave a crosshatching? This helps the oil cling to the walls until the ring scrapes it off.

Maybe I read the comments wrong. But I think he said there were still scratches from the piston committing suicide.
Dude, then more meat needs to be taken off the walls. Deep scratches will case a lose of compression among other things.
Don't get me wrong, I have known several guys who only put in new pistons and rings-never bore or anything. And away they go-with varing degrees of success!! Used to be pretty cheap to do that. I don't think so anymore.

Wow, I've been rebuilding engines wrong since 1976, and none has blown up so it's all by dumb luck! FARG, I wish I knew earlier that honing was a waste of time, I could have saved that half hour per engine..
I guess I also don't need to oil the bearings and cylinders before assembly, or chamfer the sharp edges.. Sigh, all that time wasted!!!
And I guess I don't need clamps on that green neoprene hose either..
Any other myths you want to shatter for me?

One cylinder needed to be honed(the one that didn't need to be replaced) I gave it a light honing. My sled wot makes maybe a 1-3 psi difference from not on the throttle.

LMAO I love these type of threads. Everyone has different theories. Holding it WOT to check the compression? I never did that? And my readings were 120 PSI in my MXZ. So if I hold it open I will get what? 140 PSI? Or would it go down? Anyways.
I heard that:
Use mineroil oil after engine rebuild to break your rings in. Never hold the throttle open for very long during break in. Mix your first 3 tanks of gas 50:1. Give it shots of gas to break the engine in becuase then it will run btter after the rings are broken in.
And thats all I heard. :D
If you cant fix it with duct tape, tylnol, or band aids your screwed.
