Hello,

I have always been interested in snowmobiling and was wondering if you guys could answer a couple of questions. I have been looking at a 2002 Polaris xc 700. If I were to get this would it be too much for me as a beginner or would I be fine with it. Also what should I look for in a snowmobile that would be areas of interest to make sure it is in good order. Also, We have a trail right down from our new lakehome, would it be mess up the carbides and track if it were ridden on a road? Would it be better to trailer it over there? Thanks for the time and sorry if any of the questions may seem stupid. I just wanna get this right.

Thanks

so just cross the road and ride the ditches. going across the road wont hurt any thing over time your carbides will get wore down tho

If I go south on the trails from my house, I have to run about 1.5 miles of side road and ditch mix. Try to stick with ditches if possible. Just don't tear up anybody's blacktop driveway if there's any.

Once you get some good experience riding and are ready to bring out the hidden power in those 700s let me know. Just some simple clutch work, jetting and traction will make a world of difference. BTW, that is a very nice sled to begin on. It handles well, is reliable, fairly quick in stock form, and rides well. Go for it.

Check carbides, slides, suspension, track(any tears or torn off lugs), belly pan, compression(should be at around 120psi, no lower than 100)
if you do get it, make sure to fill up the grease fittings.
Also, with the 700, locate the brake lever before pressing the throttle.
If the trail is not too far then no trailer is neccesary but it would be wise to stay in the ditch if possible.
Welcome to snowmobiling, hope you have fun and lots of snow,

I might have missed some stuff to check but I'm sure someone will fill the rest in:)

-To ride or not to ride, what a stupid question!

-Ice, snow, or grass, I'll still kick your ass.

Snowmobiling is one of those sports that once you do it for little, your absolutely hooked, and you get better at riding all the time. Every time you go out, you will gain experience. Whether you want to trail ride, jump, race, ditch bang, hillclimb, or whatever, it's all fun.

XC 700's are nice sleds. Reliable and tough.
