I took the skid out of my 1998 Xc 700. The shop manual online said that there is a lock collar on the left side of the sproket drive shaft. There isn't one. Is this a problem or did this sled not have a lock collar on it?

The lock collar is part of the bearing, isn't it? It keeps the driveshaft in the location you want it in (centered). Maybe see if a dealer has one in stock that you can look at and see for sure.

There should be some set screws at the very least. You will need to remove the speedo drive and flangette bolts and pull the bearing off the shaft. Usually a good time to replace them.

I dont think you have to remove the bearing to remove the drive axle. I cant remember exactly how mine goes together for some reason, Im drawing a complete blank. I think one of the 3 bolt flanges is on the inside of the tunnel and the other is on the outside and they sandwich the chassis with the center of the bearing lined up with the chassis itself. If you want to change the bearing then you obviously have to remove it. But to just change the track you take the bolts out of the flanges/speedo gear and leave the inner flange and bearing on the axle. First though you have to remove the chain case cover and gear set. Then then when disassemble the other side you just slide the axle out of the chaincase side and itll come right out. Someone please correct me if I am wrong, I forget the exact process every year till I go through it again.
There is supposed to ba lock coller, but some of the aftermarket replacements have set screws instead of an eccentric coller. Its prob been replaced at least once siince 1998. Its possible that your bearing and lock coller are so rusted that they just look like one piece. Best thing is to get the axle out and assess the situation from there.
Good luck.
