Hi guys. I'm new to your forum, but have been riding for over 20 years. I currently have a bone stock '98 Ultra with the Xtra-12 that I bought brand new. It's got less than 3000 miles on it and has been a great sled. But now I've got the itch to buy something a little newer, but I don't want to break the bank, so I'm focusing on Edge chassis sleds. I like trail riding and like to hit it pretty hard in the twisties, but I'm in my mid 40s now, so I'm not going nuts.

I may go look at an '04 XC SP 800 with about 2500 miles on it. The guy claims it's in great shape and is asking $3600.

What do you think about this sled? I've read about some problems with the cranks in the 800s, but how common are these problems? How many miles can you typically expect out of these motors? Anything else to keep in mind?

Thanks for your help.

I have a 2004 XC SP 800, its a great sled, I had to replace the VES slides, the originals were not strong enough and broke at the neck (like mine did) but other than that it works great.
I average about 1200 miles a year no real issues.

go for it. pretty low miles and the price isnt terrible. i love the graphics on the 2004 and 2005 edges (unlike the xcsp's during 2002 and 2003, those were really lame and ugly)

Make sure it has the SS exhaust valves. IF not be ready to buy some and put them in.

Thanks for the feedback, guys.

How can I check whether or not it has the stainless valves? And if I need them, what's a good source and what should I expect to pay?

you will have to pull them out and see if they are aluminum or ss. Prepare to pay quite a bit for the valves. I don't remember off hand but I think they were in the $70 range. A polaris dealer can get them for you or try babbits or ronnies

the aluminum valves are lighter then the steel obviously. that's one way of checking. and they are about 70 a piece like what xcr440 said. pretty good machine stock. but the machine is thirsty. if you really want that machine to hook up get a clutch kit for it. also about at 5-6000 miles replace the water pump bearings. when the water pump failed, i had to spend a whole lot replacing a cyl, pistons, water pump parts, and that was pretty expensive. other than that. strong engine. its kinda thristy tho.

Right on! Some sweet deals on 600 Fuses that are stellar performers in a rider forward chassis.

Shady800x - When you say "thirsty", what kind of mileage are you talking about? My Ultra seems to get around 10-12mpg. Does an 800 like fuel more than an Ultra?

Not to go off topic here but the fusion is hardly a rider forward chassis....

And as P1man said, there are a lot of deals to be had out there on newer sleds. I don't think I'd go over $3k, if that, on the sled you described.

i'm guessing about the same milage, well maybe better, in good conditions. the faster the machine goes, the less gas it uses. mainly in cruising speed. which is about 60-80mph. generally the triples use less gas then a twin. almost 4 stroke like. my crank never broke. only seized the engine once, due to a failed water pump. thought it was frozen carbs. i was wrong. so far i spent so much money on it over the years, enough to purchase a new snowmachine. what i like to say about machines, ''you take care of it, it takes care of you.'' my snowmachine is going to be 7 years old in 2 weeks. i wonder what birthday present i should get it. lol

It all depends on how you have it set up. Gearing and clutching is a big factor on fuel economy.

If you're a trail rider but your sled is set up with too low of a gear ratio you're going to be cruising at a higher rpm then needed, thus lowering your mpg's. So if fuel economy is something you're worried about gear tall.

It sounds like this sled is stock except for an aftermarket silencer. So assuming factory gearing/clutching, should it be pretty well suited for trail riding?

yea it's well suited. i used to water skip with it too. baptized it once lol. didn't happen again. i seriously need to get the clutches rebuilt. haven't touched them and i am curious on how it will perform with aftermarket clutching. was thinking of the new team secondary clutch for it. along with the primary kit for it. from what i hear, more power will get on the ground with the kit.

how can i adjust clutching to set up the sled for better fuel economy. (i'll be working with a 2008 IQ 700, stock with 64gram weights and a black/green primary spring)
and when you say gear tall, what do you mean? is that like getting a larger gear on top and a smaller one on bottom?

Well, this sled is gone. After agreeing to a price and making verbal agreement Saturday evening, I call the guy this morning (Sunday) to finish things off and he tells me he sold it to someone else. His story is that someone came along with cash Saturday night after he said it was mine. I'm sure he sold it for more than the agreed to price he had with me, but we had a deal.

So, my search continues. Thanks for the help.

that really sucks, but you cant blame him. a sled is for sale until its sold. and sold means its paid for or money is put down on it. when i sell a sled, i never hold it for someone until he puts a few hundred down and pays for the rest when he takes it away within a week.
