I finally finished getting my rear suspension back in after replacing the inside idler wheel and when all was said and done, the rear springs can't even hold the back end up! As soon as I sit on it, it bottoms all the way out by a long shot. I checked my springs and they seem to be sitted correctly, they're just not providing hardly any force! How could this happen? Before the rear end was fairly stiff. The only thing I have different from when I took it out is the front limiter straps are set a little looser, but that shouldn't affect the rear, should it?

Its just strange. When I lift the back end and let it go, it just falls to the bottom of its travel. Its a 97 XC 440 w/ Xtra-10 and has less than 4000 miles on it.

Any ideas? Worst case scenario, I'll make a new bracket to mount the front of the rear springs higher to increase the resistance.

Yeah, the only things I undid were the front limiter straps, and the cross brace that holds the center idler wheels. The front shock was disconnected too, but that's on there fine. I didn't touch anything out back that I can remember.

Pics are uploading....

it seems to me that you missed something on there. it shouldn't be doing that if you put back everything obviously.

I agree, something just doesn't look right and I only have an Extra 12 to look at. Was there a lot of tension when you hooked the long end of the spring back on to the spring sliders?

The rods that run parallel on each side of the back shock? I didn't remove them so if they're wrong, it was how it always was.

Yeah, there was quite a bit of force from the springs. But I guess I've never felt a fresh set to judge them by.

They're loose because the springs aren't extending the suspension nearly enough to use them! I'll have some time in the next couple of hours to go take a peek at it again.

Could my springs just be that smoked? Maybe the suspension was jammed up earlier? If that's the case, I'm going to make those lifters because there's no way I'm taking that all out again!

Are your springs tensioned in the correct direction? It almost looks like they're pulling the suspension down

Yes, they are tensioned in the correct direction. There is some resistance, just not nearly enough.

In one of your pictures it looks like the front/bottom end of the rear shock is way to low in the skid. I think it's supposed to be above the rails and it looks like it's down close to the bottom. Do you have the pivot arm swung down instead of up? If so, that is your problem.

Hmm, that I don't know for sure, is the pivot arm connected to the base of the rear shock?

Is the front shock in the correct position? I think there are two different mounting locations for the front/top end of the front shock.

I had put it back in the same position it was in before, which I believe was the lower/front one.

Yes I believe the front/bottom end of the rear shock connects to a pivot arm. Is this a short track xtra 10 or a 133/136?

I've added some pics including pics of the lower shock mount. Is that pivot the C shaped piece? That doesn't look like something I'll be able to bring up w/o taking everything apart again, is it? :(

Yep, that's what I thought, you have the pivot swung down instead of up. At worst you would just have to take out the rear mounting bolts and drop the back of the skid down, but I think if you just take loose the shock and coupling rods you can probably swing it back up and reconnect them. Once it's where it belongs, the coupling rods keep it from over-pivoting and swinging down like that.

Looks like I was wrong on the pivot location. Yours looks the same as the OP's. Does it swing down from that location when the suspension compresses?

On the longer xtra 10 the shock mount pivot is pretty much straight up when the suspension all the way up and pivots forward when it compresses.

atvman29, sorry for leading you in the wrong direction.
