Before you hit the trail allow it to warm up to operaing temps and then let it cool down do this 3 times. This is called seasoning.

riding normally varing the throttle positions. wot blasts for a few seconds.

woodbooga: (WOOD-boog-ah), n. regional dialect, common to areas of New Hampshire and Maine including the towns of Ossipee, Alton, Farmington, Acton, and Lebanon; one who attempts to obtain free firewood to fuel woodburning appliances in an effort to mitigate expenses related to home heating with fossil fuels. Frequently used as a term of derision by non-woodburners who mock the presence of loose bark and other wood waste in the beds of their pickup trucks.

Ive heard about 100 different ways to break in a sled. My manual said dont go over 1/2 throttle for the first 3 hours. And dont hold it in one throttle position for more than 10-15 seconds.

^^^ i havel always been told to add oil for the first tank and the first tank of every season after that. also to not keep it in the same position for longer than 10 seconds, BUT some people say that is best to baby your sled for the first couple hundred miles, but some people swear by being hard on them for the first couple hundred miles... just listen to the manual haha.

1000 options here - I personally did a bunch of reasearch years ago, spoke with go-kart racers, mx guys, jet ski guys and the like who are always dealing with new engines and new rings, pistons and the like. The result was everyone seemed to seperately insist on if it is a two stroke, add 50:1 mix or no extra, start, idle few min only enough to get it to temp and off you go, varied throttle, making sure to do some "pulls" on the motor up the revs - not to baby it or beat it. That was it. no mystery, no vodo. I also found that most real testing showed more oil with correct fuel/jetting was best overall for piston temp, ring life and power. I have been doing this now for years on many sleds, weed trimmers, jet skis and the like with no problems and compressions are always strong. I saw a video one time taken at the kawasaki jet ski assembly area of them hooking up a new jet ski, out of the water, firing it and holding it to the pin for a few seconds. As far as four stroke goes, my father went to the corvette factory back in 99' and picked his up next door? anyhow, each corvette is pulled up to a dyno, a screen drops down and he said they are run right there as new, they also have a track to run some of them on. I'm sure there are some details missing here but I hope this saves you some time. In the jet ski world, our injection systems run between 40:1 and 50:1 at full throttle, I run my 3 stand ups at 40;1 pre-mix with blue marble oil. I have the original crank in my 650 sx from 1987 and only one set of rings (180psi, dry pipe, dual cooling timing advance, reeds, ported, you name it) - this thing has some hours on it! I always warm up everything and then ride it, fog and stabil everything and thats it.
Just my 2 cents... Speaking of jet skis - they are all put away!!! pulling out the sleds now!!! Pray for snow!!!!

If you follow Cat recommendations you'll be fine. If you follow the recommendations and something breaks...tell them you followed their directions for break-in and they'll be liable
