Do pipes add top end and take away low end or do they add overall horsepower

Thanks Jon

Well first it all depends on what your talking about...snowmobile, quad, truck?

Your probly talking about sleds, so here again it all depends on the sled...twin or trips?

I know with my Banshee the twin pipes I got are more of the mid-top end performance. I cant honestly answer your question if I lost low end or had overall performance cause I did a lot of other work to it at the same time. But big difference from the stock twins to an aftermarket twins.

But I can say that my neighbor just put a set of SLP twins on his 05 XC 600, SLP says 10hp from mid to topend. Well for the full price that he paid and all the money he had into the jetting and clutching let alone his own time was it worth the money?...NO.(IMO) I just dropped a gear on my sled and I can still beat him with my stock single pipe. Oh yeah his sled really pulls harder after 25mph but he didnt gain anymore speed out on top. He has to jet everytime the wind changes direction and or the temp moves more than 5 degrees. He didnt gain anything on lowend. Now the real question is did he truly get 10hp...with the jetting dead on and the clutches setup right no, I dont think he did. Thats just my opinion.

Ok I was talking for a twin sled like for a 500 because I keep hearing that if you put pipes on a smaller engine then it takes away low end power

I don't think they take away low end, but you see the gains at top end more with the twins. A single pipe I think adds more low end.

Depends on the pipes you use..

Some pipes are tuned toward a specific RPM range, and give a big boost in that range, but will suffer in other ranges. (drag racing)

Some pipes are tunes toward an improvement across the whole RPM range. (trail riding)

Pick pipes tuned for your application.

What kind of pipes would be good for the trail riding then?

An aftermarket single will give you an increased pull throughout the lower and midrange which is nice for most scenarios. Twins will give more pull throughout the mid and upper range which I would find beneficial for long straight trails and lakes (or long WOT runs in the steep and deep).

I recently put a BMP y-pipe and pipe mod (single pipe) on my 700. There was a definite improvement throughout the bottom and mid-range as I mentioned...love the feeling...well worth the money.

i would say that you would only see very minimal gains with a twin pipe on a 500? Also would probably be rather spendy and hard to find a manufacturer unless you found it used.

I believe AAEN makes a single pipe for that sled...

Yes AAEN makes pipe for the fuji 500 but it only gives u a very small gain in HP for that price it is not worth it in my mind unless u find a used pipe it would be cool to have. also that fuji 488 or 500 liquid was not made for pipes they were made to be bulletproof and run miles after miles the choice is yours

We adjusted the clickers, swapped the pull rods and changed the ignition curve for that little extra torque.

I'm curious why your sled is in the shop...

It seems to me, that if you want to get into getting more power from your sled, you'd have to get into some tinkering to make adjustments, as once you start modding the sled it will usually require it.

If you're the type of person who isn't handy with tools, you might want to think twice about modding your sled, and opt for upgrading to a faster sled instead.

SLP used to make twin pipes for the fuji 500 aka 488 liquid but I hear they did not do crap for that engine that is why most people that bought them wanted them for sound and SLP discontinued them and they are some of the hardest twin pipes to find. I agree with Ugly_old_Poo_kid on that if u want to go faster u should maybe look into buying a bigger size engine like a 600 or 700
