Well with the lack of snow and the amount of free time I decided to try and get another project off the "Honey-do-list"

It's a trash cabinet made out of "Red Oak" of course(the wife would not except anything else).

The top will be a piece of MDF with glued on laminate w/ an oak 1/2" border around the edges and mitered at a 45% angle(I Know things will get messy up there so I decided not to go w/ an oak top) Just easier for cleaning. The drawer will be good for the bags and misc. crap.

Pay no attention to the messy garage.

Oh, come on, just use some fine quality wafer board(OSB)

like I used on my cat house. That would have won you some points... Just say " Honey, times are hard"
BTW... It looks great, excellent craftsmanship!

Looks good Glenn did you make the door too?? Been thinking of starting some of the many projects I have lined up in the wood shop but I just can't seem to get the ambition to do it yet. Remember, a happy wife is a happy life!!! (PS, your garage is a mess)

Yep, made the door also. With the lack of snow it makes it easy to go out to the garage and get some projects done. And as far as the garage is concerned it's always messy. Always have thing going on out there from car repairs to projects. Plus I have limited space......us city folk dont have room for shops and garages with the limited land.

I made something very similar to that in high school. I still have it in my room but it needs a leg or two sanded down. Yours looks great!

That really came out nice!!! I bet it is costly for the solid wood but not as expensive as buying a finished project.

Total cost for the wood was under $100.00 I buy it from a guy I know.

Don't ya just HATE that?!?!?

Rock, oak is the standard wood for cabinets these days-you won't find much else for a cheaper cost except maybe pine. And your wife would divorce you in a New York minute if you tried to pawn that off on her. It's getting to the point that even birch and poplar are being comsidered "specialty" wood.

Unless you plan to paint your projects, slow growth lumber looks a lot better stained than fast growing species.

One problem I encountered was I wanted this to be 36" high, The same height as the counters in the kitchen and when I cut all the wood for this I forgot to add the 3/4 " mdf for the top, So I now have total height of 36 3/4". stupid brain was working that day. Oh well It will have to do. I have maybe $75.00 in material in it and have seen the ones in the store sell for well over $200.00 and those didn't have a drawer. I was also flip-flopping on weather to have a drawer or a fake drawer with a lift up lid. Glad I went with the drawer though the lift up lid would of gave me more storage..

Those could easily go for $400, the store bought ones are laminated plywood generally and are cheaply made.

Rock, I want to interrupt your thread for a moment...
I have some very old chairs(70-80 years old, or more?) that are down to bare wood. Very rough grain to them right now. I'll get some pictures of them. how should I go about refinishing them? I want to keep the natural wood, maybe some light staining. So I guess I want to know what sealing should be done, the sanding order and stain/clear product recommendations.
Thanks!

Something like that I would suggest sanding sponges from 3M....they come in many grits and seem to work well for uneven and round sufaces. It would be time consuming but worth it since they dont make quality furniture anymore.

A sanding mouse would probably work good for the larger surfaces.

As far as stains I would recommend a water based stain(a golden oak would look nice IMO) for chairs and atleast 2-3 coats of a Polyurethane is best for surfaces that get a lot of wear. Semi gloss Min-wax sealer is a good choice. just use a 220 grit sandpaper in-between coats. Since chairs get used heavily I would maybe even put on a 4th coat. Greasemonkey does a lot of wood working also, maybe he will chime in.
Oil Based Stain:
Oil-based stains are not easily penetrated by the elements.
Oil-based stains dry more slowly than water-based Stains and thus maintain a more even finish.
Oil-based stains are far more durable than water-based Stains and thus require far less maintenance.
Water based stain:

Water-based stains can adhere to wood that has been previously Painted with an oil-based stain.
Water-based stains allow air to move in and out of the paint so that The paint does not trap water and cause decay.
Water-based stains maintain quality of color longer.
Water-based stains are not nearly as flammable as oil-based stains.
Water-based stains dry relatively quickly and allow for a quick fix.
Water-based stains emit an odor not quite as potent as oil-based stains.
