I am trying to talk the wife into letting me pick up another sled (cheap one) to work on this summer with some of our tax return money. I am a total engine novice and i want to learn more, so i figure the best way todo that is hands on. I have a clymer polaris shop manual 1990-95 so i was thinking something in that range. Seems like lots of xlt's out there, but i dont want to get in over my head. Any advice would be great.
My Sleds:
-1991 Polaris RXL 650 Triple (Xtra 10 rear)
-2002 Super Sport 550 Fan (wife's)

I would start on a even older sled with a twin motor because there easier to work on and a lot more simpler.

If you want a reliable sled that is simple to work on, I would go for an Indy/XCR 440 or Indy 500. Take a lickin and keep on tickin. They don't get much easier to work on than those!

The triples can be more fun but for a novice tuning and troubleshooting can be a bit harder, I have to agree with the majority about finding a mid 90's twin liquid cooled Indy, can't do wrong there, easy to work on, abundance affordable of used parts, cheap to run.

I500 all the way, one of the best motors Poo ever made.

To any unsuspecting victim the Banshee's powerband comes on like a 2 dollar whore about to lose her corner to the new girl on the block. She hits you hard and keeps pulling until your eyes are about to roll back in your head and the only thing that brings your vision back into focus is when you've had enough and decide to roll off of her for a second or two. But you know all the while that any time you need one hell of a fix she'll be right there at your command. That's deep **** right there fellas...

I'd have to agree with I500's. The 95's were the first year since 1992 that they had a carb model. You may want to stay away from the EFI's if your novice. I would also suggest a 1995 XCR 440, very nice sled.

If you want a triple, the Ultra is the ultimate in my opinion.
