Does anybody here have a High Speed Inernet connection by Satelite such as Direct Way or something else? We're thinking of moving out to an acreage and the only way to get High Speed is by Satelite. What's it like? Fast, Slow, etc. Can you game on it?
Thanks,

I heard it's not bad for downloads, but it has really high latency, since satellites are kind of far away.

from what i have heard, its $$ to buy the equipment, 100 a month after that with a 1 year contract, good downloads, crap for uploads, hardly works in winter, and in reg months it crashes alot. Depends on what you want it for and how addicted to sf/internet you are.

a family member has dirctway, and i just set up a network for him tonight. when it works its fast, about the speed of cable, but if you have a weak signal then its hit or miss. also clear skys his ping to google.com is between 600-800 ms, and on a crapy ranny day like today there around 1000-1500 ms so gaming is out of the question. his service is 69.95 a month and he payed 595 about two years agao to have it installed. he lives in the middle of no were so its all the have so hes happy with it. hope this helps

I wonder if it would help me because my max speed is 24.0 if im lucky. The one reason its like that is because i live out in the middle of nowere and the phone lines are bad here.

If you are looking for something slightly better than dial-up it's ok. No satellite service is anywhere near DSL or cable. Also all of the satellite providers have a FAP (Fair Access Policy) Basicly they throttle your download bandwidth. 150Mb over 8 hours or some numbers.

150 over 8 hours. That's dial up running wfo continious.

Q: What is FAP & How does it work?
A: Here is the "official" Hughes Explanation:
Fair Access Policy
To ensure equal Internet access for all DIRECWAY® subscribers, Hughes Network Systems maintains a running average fair access policy. Fair access establishes an equitable balance in Internet access across Satellite broadband services by service plan for all DIRECWAY customers regardless of their frequency of use or volume of traffic. To ensure this equity, customers may experience some temporary throughput limitations. DIRECWAY Internet access is not guaranteed. This policy applies to all service plans including "Unlimited" plans where customers' use of the Service is not limited to a specific number of hours per month.
DIRECWAYsystem usage data indicates that approximately 5% of subscribers are responsible for a disproportionate share - often as much as half — of the total DIRECWAY service traffic. Unfortunately, many of those subscribers are not using DIRECWAY for its intended purpose.
To ensure that all DIRECWAY subscribers have fair and equal access to the benefits of the Satellite broadband service, DIRECWAY has enacted a Fair Access Policy (FAP) to prevent abusive consumption of bandwidth by a handful of users.
FAP is straightforward: based on an analysis of usage data, Hughes Network Systems has established a DIRECWAY usage threshold well above the maximum typical usage rates. When a customer exhibits patterns of system usage which exceed that threshold for an extended period of time, the FAP may temporarily limit that subscriber's throughput to ensure the integrity of the system for all DIRECWAY subscribers.
Typically, the restrictions will be lifted within 8-12 hours of the original application of the FAP if the customer's usage in this period stays below the FAP threshold.
For example, you may experience FAP if the cumulative requested downloads in a relatively short time period (1-4 hours) exceeds 169 MB* (megabytes). An example of what can be downloaded within 169 MB* would be a software application such as Microsoft Internet Explorer or Adobe Acrobat. Normal Internet surfing, on the other hand, generates small downloads for each Web page viewed. For example, an hour of surfing can generate 1-10 MB of download activity depending on the content being surfed — well below the amount required to trigger FAP.
Subscribers are likely to avoid the limitations imposed by the FAP if their use is typical of the majority of Internet users and consists of Web surfing and a reasonable amount of downloading.
Here's the "Bucket" analogy that fits the FAP to the best of our knowledge.
For the Consumer Edition, think of a bucket full of 169 MB of data, no matter how fast you drain it, once the 169 MB is gone, it's empty. Period.
It fills at a trickle rate, 47 kbps for the Consumer Edition so it takes approx. 8 hours to refill if you "empty" it.
If it fills for an hour or so, you can download another few megs until it's empty again.
The Business Edition refills at a slightly higher rate of 56 kbps and is a bigger "bucket" of 500 megs but the same analogy applies.
Other companies have the same type of thing in place as well.

How much bandwidth can their satelite handle? Seems like a bunch of bull and would never work for me. I sometimes download 3 to 4 GB worth of ISO files within an hour on my cable.

Depends on how many people are on the same transponder as you. DirectWay only leases a couple of transponders on a perticular satellite but they lease these sets on multiple satellites. The commercial GEO satellties that they use have a total of 500MHz of bandwidth.

Have you checked into wireless? I was going to go with directway because it seemed like the only thing in my area, then I found this.
http://www.gfwireless.com/html/internet.htm
I have the megabit connection,(I usually download or upload at about 130kb/s) for $39.95/month, it's not as fast as cable, but it beats the hell out of dial up, and it's always on.
I live 2 miles out of town. but from what I understand their tower covers about 30 miles from town.

They will be lucky to reach customers 14 miles or so out of town. I don't believe we (Wiktel) offers wireless access in GF area yet, although we do have dial-up there. We have about 15 or so wireless sites throughout NW MN.

I wonder if I could get a high speed signal up to my brother some how. He's like 1.5 air miles away from me up on a hill. I am also up on a hill.

Me and my bro can use walkie talkies from my apartment to his house. But, I can't see his house. If we both had 30 foot antennas in the air I bet they could see eachother.

My parents have their high speed satellite through a provider called invisimax. I think they cover a lot in ND and MN, but I'm sure that is the extent of their coverage area. I think their website is www.invisimax.com. Also, when I worked at Best Buy we were not allowed to let Canadian residents to purchase any of the satellite systems because the providers were unable to collect from the customers. I don't know if this is the case anymore, but it was about 2 years ago. We used to have a lot of residents from Winnipeg come down to purchase satellite systems but we were unable to sell to them.

If you could use every transponder and 256QAM about 3 Gbps. 256QAM = 36Mb per 6 MHz.
