Well I went home for the weekend to give my truck a run since its summer and its been stored all winter almost 6 months. Well I've been running dual straights with these mufflers from a shop. I've ran the truck 2yrs like this with no problems and passed many troopers. Well here some hot shot kid in town has been ripping around at nite with his truck. I was out for 30 minutes when I get pulled over on a back road. I get layed into about my exhaust, head light covers, tires, and more. He gives me a fine for glass pack exhaust. he said I can show up in court if I want or pay the fine. Well the thing is I dont have glass packs at all. I have two mufflers that look similar but they are some other type of muffler. I didn't want glass packs because of this reason. Is it even worth going to court on the date or should I just pay the fine.
Kinna Pi**ed off a bit because some hot shot kid goes around making all this noise at 1 am and I get his fine on my 1st ride. I know my truck is loud and I accept that but at least this cop could see that I dont have glass packs on. Best thing is he pulled my friend over 5 minutes before me because of a can on his car and he gets a warning.
One great weekend to start summer off its a good thing I didn't have my new tires on. He would have really yelled about how far them ones stick out.

Always go to court, it is always worth a shot.
I would do as stormrider62033 says and take pictures of your exhaust, light covers, tires. I would also do some research into local regulations and see what, if anything, it says regarding light covers. I know that someplaces have written ordinances and some have not. Do the same for your local exhaust ordinances and tires.
Exhaust should have a db level that differentiates legal and illegal. If that is the case ask why your truck wasn't properly tested before you were ticketed. You could also request that your truck be tested, if it passes then it shouldn't be a ticket. If you fail then you are stuck but it is worth a shot. If it is "in the eyes of the officer" opinion type of thing you are sort of stuck but again, worth a shot.
As for your tires I assume they are DOT approved and the only rule I know of for tire size (at least around here) is more related to how high the truck sits. Some measure from the bumper to the ground and some from the floor pans to the ground.
Lastly, and hopefully this is common sense, when you go to court play the game. By that I mean dress up, have all your "evidence" organized and ready to be presented, be respectful even to the a-hole cop who put you here in the first place. I have been through this game more than once (a lot more than once really ) and only been stuck with no break one time. I sent in a letter that time rather than actually appearing and got a letter back that said "Too bad, so sad", or something to that effect.
Always go to court, you got nothing to lose.

As stated above you should be able to go down to the police station and get your exhaust tested. I'm assuming it's not stock. Because around here it is illegal to modify your exhaust at all. So even if you do pass under the maximum decibels they might hit you with that, depending on the area you live in. Then you can show up to court and probably explain the difference between your exhaust and the glass packs people throw under there. I know one of my friends got hit with the same thing and he went in with pics and explained what it was and even had the db's tested. The judge was inpressed by his preperation and was let off with a 100.00 offense for modifying his exhaust instead of 500.00 for db violations. He then had to change the exhaust back to stock, and prove it had been done by taking pictures and showing the cops down at the cop shop. Then he switched it right back.
Cause I don't give a rats about who took second or 12th for that matter your just the next loser in a long line of many losers.

I have no clue what voodoo is trying to say. As everyone knows the front tires on an 80's chevy stick out a few inches more then the rear. I only have 33" BFG's on and the back is right with the fender and the font sticks out about and inch past. I was nice when he pulled me over and he said if a truck wasn't running around town at 1 am cause problems he wouldn't have been looking for a truck with an exhaust. Just shows how things change over the yrs. 2+ yrs running the truck like this even on busy weekend when the troopers are out and nothing. Get some angry cop and ppl in the town and they slam you. This was marinette county and I live in forest. Im think im just going to pay the 156.20 ticket and be done with it. If I go to court, I have to take a good trip which is about 45 min to the court house. I dont plan on changing the exhaust at all and I dont plan on driving in that town again. So if it comes to me getting stopped in all the other towns for some odd reason all change it then. I wont lie my truck had a good rap to it when you lay on it and Ive won muffler rap contests at all the car shows i went to. But when you are just cruising on a road its just a lil rumble, but he was out looking for a truck to bust so I took the heat. I guess it happens oh well. I just love how a car with a can gets off and the Harley that went rumbling past town will never get stopped. The cop said I can throw on some turbo mufflers or blackcats. Made me chuckle a little bit as they are just as loud as the ones I have now. I no the cop didn't even look under the truck at all because he would have noticed more then he wanted to. The mufflers are round like a glass pack ,but they are some goofy turn around baffled muffler and Im running headers with no catellitc(spelling) converter.
Well I no you guys dont wanna here me rant and what not and all hear the you deserve it so deal with it. Well thanks for everyones opinions on this and im not sure if running to court is worth it. Thanks again

You know my stance on it so that's that.
One of the cars I use to have had a chevy small block with headers and duals w/flowmasters. Got stopped once after I went by a cop at the top of first gear and he was down on all fours looking at my exhaust with me as I showed him the two mufflers and full pipes etc. etc. and convinced him that it was all ok.
My 69 Firebird 400 w/ cam, headers, flowmasters dumped behind mufflers that I have a blast w/ setting off alarms on parked cars has never been stopped for exhaust volume.
There is no rhyme or reason to it. Like you said, look at all the Harleys out there nowadays.

I heard with stock exhaust you don't get tickets like this.
I've never been stopped.
Is it really worth the noise?
Every single day of my life has been worse than the day before it. That means every day you see me, that's the worst day of my life.

It is the same as anything with your sled. Is it worth modifying it for an extra 5hp, or a different color combination, or a longer track etc.? It is all in the eye of the beholder.
Personally I like the sound of a good V-8 running through free flowing exhaust and cruising down the road. I also like the sound of my sled singing through it's pipes. To me, and 440racer, it is worth it for the noise. There are also performance gains to be had, which are pretty much always worth it.

Im not trying to complain about it and money is not object so im not worried about the ticket. Just wanted to no if court was worth it just so the cop gets his stuff right. If you are gonna right tickets get everything straight and attempt to look under the darn truck. You cant even hear my truck unless you really rap on it and at highway speeds you hear the tires over the exhaust.
Polaris-man you say you have never been stopped. I've never been stopped for 2+ years with this truck and I've run into many troopers and county cops all during high traffic events. I think if it was really loud a trooper would have got me along time ago as they have a field day with cars/trucks. Just happens to be some hot shot punk kid was ripping around just like they do on sleds cause problems. Got the whole town all made and the cop needed to stop someone to make it look like he was doing something about it. Well i dont have much to say because I know how it goes with some guys on this site and it will start a big ole thread where nothing gets accomplished

do what my buddy does and got away with it is all he did was drill a hole in each pipe about 3 feet from were the tail pipe ends stuff steel wool in the pipe and put a bolt in to hold the steel wool and its makes it so the truck isnt as loud and it baffles the noise down alot then when you want the steel wool out take the bolt out and rev the truck up and it blows the steel wool rite out but ive only had a fix it ticket and i had to have a cop check and make sure it was all rite

I feel for ya bout the ticket, have 3 loud exhaust/no muffler tickets myself......from the same cop!!! Good luck with going to court, went the first two times, and nothing happened other than having to pay the fine, and pissing off the cop who gave me the ticket(which most likely prompted the next tickets I got). I have a flowmaster muffler, which isn't even close to a glasspack. The 3rd time I just paid the fine. Luckily, the F***er who always gave me the tickets quit or transfered or something, but he's gone!!

I played the court game in the last year and won, so in the future I will do it again. I got pulled over for supposedly tailgaiting a State Trooper. The nob moved over two lanes at one time and cut me off to get on a ramp going a different direction and then has the nerve to pull me over for tailgating. The first time I went to court they tried to cut me a no points deal, but no reduction in fine. I plead not guilty and they set a court date. On the next court date they tried to cut me a deal before it came up to the judge. Again I said no. When it came up, the county attorney stated the officer called in sick and was not there. The judge set anorther date. On the 3rd court day, They again offered the same deal. I said no again and the officer did not show. The judge then dismissed it.
If everyone did this instead of just paying the fine, cops wouldn't write so many tickets because they would be in court all the time. I just happen to work 3rd shift ,so I didn't have to take off of work for any court dates like a 1st shifter would.

According to a cop that I know they don't mind going to traffic court at all, at least in his department. He said that they get 3 hours pay for court time if they are there for 3 hours, or 10 minutes and the court pay is good money.
Regardless I still go to court and have gotten a break on every appearance.

I know cops and are related to them.. They love court. Overtime pay.
I had an officer once tell me that if I plead not guilty and took him to court that I was going to get 3 more tickets. I plead not guilty and I got 3 more tickets. The grand total was at 7 for that stop ;). Don't ride a dirt bike down a back road. haha..
I got enough court stories.. been pulled over more then 30 times since I have been 16. NO MORE now

lol im right there with you matt. I've been pulled over on sleds for stupid things and I even get stopped in the middle of a lake on a jet ski. They gave me 0 fines however and just said have a nice day. I even got one for hunting within so many feet of a road way the road was a back road. The officer said it was a marked road and so on. Once we talked it over i got off the hook and went on my way. Im just gonna pay the fine its not worth taking it to court and taking off work. Now that he said they are glass backs etc I found my recepits to prove what they are. If i get stopped again at least I can make the right the correct ticket this time. They are flowmaster HUSHPOWER from what the recepit states. I went on to the flowmatser web site and listened to the sound clip they have of them. Such a nice rumble they produce.
Mat what did you get for riding the bike down the road. I live way up in Northern WI and its pretty much the sticks. I came around the corner one morning to see my two friends riding down the highway with a 400EX and a KX 125. They didn't even realize the trooper behind them. He gave them a written warning and told them to stay off the road.

This is true, got my first minor tonight.....yea it sucks!!!!.......anyway the cop told me the court date, and I'm like I'll just pay the fine, no reason to go to court cuz I blew a .093 so he caught me red handed, He said joking, i'll go to court, overtime pay for me. So don't go to court unless you know you can get out of it. The cop will show up, and most likely you will be worse off then if you just pay the fine.

I suppose it all depends where you are or get stopped. If you are in or get stopped in larger metropolitan area, your chances are better that the officer won't show up. They are way to busy with serious crimes going on. If a cop had to show up for all the tickets he wrote during a month, he wouldn't be able to do anything else.

When I got my minor I had to go to court regardless. I had no choice if I wanted to or not.

So are glasspacks illegal in Wisconsin? They are tons of them here in ND and no one has ever really been bothered by the police inless they rap them off loud in town or something. I dont even have a muffler on my pickup, just a catalytic converter and it is not very loud at all"but still illegal" Sound ordinance is not inforced real heavy here yet.

- No inspection
- No insurance
- NO helmet
- No motorcycle license
- No registration
- Unauthrized use of a motor vehicle
- No turn signals ect..
The grand total was almost 2,000 in fines and he was going to impound the bike. I had to go 2 more houses down to be home and he told me I had to do it without touching the road and he was watching. That was sorta a pain in the ass.. Pissed me off that I had to go 300 more yards to get to home and he wouldn't let me take the road.
Oh, a fat cat looks like this..
