Given that I am riding and getting by on an Indy trail, does anyone have experience on the 05 or 06 fan sleds....i.e. the

Summit fan
RMK fan

I see that they put a 1.5" lug track on the summit, and come to think of it, I'll be doing about 60% trail riding, with the occasional hop into powder in the trees and up hill. What are your thoughts on these sleds? The reason I ask, is because at the impressive price of those sleds, I could buy 2. Does anyone think I would get bored on one of these? I'm not crazy, but I do like trails and powder. I was looking at the Arcticat M7, but I think this is just a little over the top for me, and a waste of money given the fact that I probably won't really use its full potential. I want to be as nimble as possible (lots of trees and slalom steering) and still be able to hop into powder once in a while.

So, fan sleds in the $5-6k range new, check them out, or run away?

Thanks guys for all your help.

A good rule of thumb is to get a sled whose mid range performance fits most of your riding style. This gives you room for high end runs and a cushion for those times that you need to go slow. If you always ride near the max performance of your sled, it won't last very long.

My Father in-laws Trail RMK (550) is awesome, it hauls really well and is nice and light, he weighs 300lbs built like a brick and scoots him to 80 just fine! I'd like to find one for my Wife..

I went from a older and unreliable liquid 440 to a newer 500 Fan with all the bells as whistles last season - I love the fan(Especially the reverse feature). But, I'm about 60-70% on the trails as well with occasional deep powder riding. I bought some SLP Powder Pros this year to accomodate the deeper snow. If I was buying a Fan Sled this year I'd be taking a very close look at the MXZ550 "X" all tricked out. I have had my sled up to 75mph on a warm day, but the spedo was still chuggin. I rarely have any need to go faster though. If top-end speed is a concern(like cruisin 100mph on a lake) then take a closer look at the liquids. Also, for the money the Polaris Indy 500's are pretty sweet liquid sleds and I believe reverse is optional.

Good gas mileage, lighter, easier maintenance, fewer possible parts to break down, what's not to love about a fan? I'd go for a REV but that's my preference. I ride local trails with a couple guys with AC panthers, like 300 something and 400 something cc engines. We get to a RR bed and I;m gone, but local trails are tight and twisty. They keep up just fine. But they buck like hell cause of the "old" suspensions. The new Doo and Poo sled suspensions are much better. You'd probably like either one.

I haven't, but I read some reviews on them and heard they are a blast to ride. If I was buying a new fan - that's it, no doubt in my mind. I have a Legend 500F and I love that sled - I could only imagine what a 05-06 MXZ Fan would ride like(butta.....).

I can't speak to the Mtn sled versions, but what I have read is positive.

I have a couple of fans, they are great! Lighter, simple, low cost, good mileage. In the woods, you can't loose me. It's more driver skill than power. When I hit the lake, I top out around 70mph and meet the others at the far end.

Mine are 04 trail tourings, stock 136" M-10/xtra-12 hybrid skids. Very versatile, can ride two up or take off passengar seat and have less weight plus a lot of storage for hitten the powder.

I rode the skidoo rev fan...think it was a 550 or something like that....it was ok but i didnt like the cornering, in performance wise ...the fans have not changed much over the years...they might be a little bit more snappy but still not the top end power

the 550 summit is built a little more for the pow and the trail rmk a little more for trail but only because of the stock track. the 136x 1.25 is a good combo track and will out do a 121x2 in the pow and does great on groomed but if deep pow is your game a 2" will be a nice upgrade.

On a similar subject, has anyone tried out a Ski-Doo Freestyle Back Country? With the 550 fan, a 136" 1.25" lug track and lighter than the Summit 550 it should be a blast, or am i out on a limb here?

Ah, the wonders of nature... Too bad they're blurred when i go past them! =)

I have an 06 polaris super sport 550. They are actually pretty snappy little sleds, I've managed to get the skis prolly 3 or 4 inches off the ground with factory suspension settings. They're not the fastest thing out there but they will keep up with the liquid cooled sled that are under 500cc until it tops out.
