well on my sled when i would drive it i would hear a grinding noise when it started rolling and when uder full out aceleration, you can feel whatever it is shaking and making noise, but when you drive nicely the noise and problems go away, would it have to do with the driveshaft or bearing and how much does it take to fix if a problem

to narrow it down, if you have driven a FWD car and the CV joints were shot and you turned thats what it sounds like, but hopefully it isnt a major part

I'd be checking the driveshaft bearings for sure,
Q: Have you been greasing your jackshaft & drive bearing on regular
intervals? If you don't you'd better start...I do grease in all points ever 500 miles(Front ski area, all points on the skid Jack & drive bearings) and chaincase oil/gasket every 1000 miles or at least twice a year, and in spring I rip the whole skid down & clean & grease everything before puttin all back together...an ounce of prevention to save a ton of cash and knowing everything is good!!!

Get er done!

Take that triangular speedo cable hub off and look at the bearing, then turn the track by hand to move the driveshaft and listen for grinding and watch the bearing.
It could also be bad bearings in any number of rear suspension wheels, or maybe even track rubbing somewhere. Dont forget the chaincase side bearings, either.

Also, inspect the chaincase and gears. Its possible the lower bolt came off the lower gear, that happend to me. It was grinding in the chaincase.

Good post ASpin, I wasn't even thinking any bearings in the skid ie-idles etc. or chaincase! I always asume that people here have check the obvious checks, I have to remember we're all learning here. I would also look at the weld mounts rubing(the top frame that holds the shock compressed) as I had that problem after installing new shocks & spring.

when you shake or turn the furthist back wheel connected to the belt you hear the ratteling. so would it be on that particular shaft? It leads into the gearcase but im hoping i dont have to take to much apart cause i dont have very much time and no place to work on it besides outside in the cold weather

Get that fixed right away!!!! My old 90 mach 1 had the same exact problem. I didn't get it fixed and the shaft moved enough to send my studs into the heat exchangers! Check your chaincase oil. Mine leaked out of the bearing and then the chain also broke. Don't ride it anymore without getting it fixed, ecspecially if you have studs.

By all means check those bearings. !!

I had a similar problem a few years ago.

When starting off or climbing steep hills, it would make an unsettleing noise.

It was the top gear skipping in the chain case. My chain had stretched beyond adjustment, replaced the chain and top gear to fix.

Either way, get it done now, cause it will fail just before your best conditions of the season.

Well i just ordered the new bearings and have set up to take the skidoo to my school mechanics lab and fix it there, so I think it will be good, how long does it usually take to get it all apart and take out the shaft cause this will be a learning experience for me.
