I took my first good look at the sled today since I had some spare time and took the air box off finding that the one carb had never been tightened when the old owner set up the carbs i guess. I tightened that up, put in some new plugs, and it seems to be running good now (hopefully). Now I am just trying to figure out how to get the air box back in since it is giving me a hard time trying to get the carb to air box boots on properly. Any tricks to doing this?

lots of patience and a little lube on rubbers. I found it goes on better when warm. Bring it in house for a hour or so.

haha yess...you need practice. I was the same way. I find using a little force and lifing the carb up and trying to get the bottom of the carb to fit into palce first and use your finger while you push the airbox back down into position slowely to try and get the rubber to fit around the carb. What works for me but like xcr440 said..need patience for it

haha..i just spent a good 20 minutes doing this tonite! I find that loosening both carbs from their grommets and putting them into the airbox first, then pushing them back into the grommets works best. Having the box warm does indeed help. Make sure you double check that the carbs are properly seated back into the grommets though if you try this aproach.

Haha, at least I don't feel so stupid anymore! I got them in finally by getting the bottoms of the carbs in first then working my way around to the top...still not something I would want to do everyday though! Thanks for all the help and I am so relieved my machine is running like it should! Now I can start to play around with the jets and clutch without worrying about getting it to run right first!

You boys have you sleds ready to go? Just wondering...I took my skid out and well..she needs some tlc. Most of my bearrings need replacing and my front shock needs to be re-done. Bushing is gone im it and the spring on it you can shake around so, thats getting fixed. Sliders were down to the line so they will be getting replaced aswell. Its to bad I never got around to it eariler cause there is spots where rust is forming on it so, next summer I will take it out and sand it and paint it. Thank the government and the use of salt on roads. Have pictures to post sometime of the process. We finnaly started to get some snowfall so..long as there is enough on the ground I will be eager to see how well the ripsaw will work.
PS..Moto-ski-man...what have you done to your sled since last. It work better? Does it reach 8200-8300rpms?

I have not had the sled out for a ride since I fixed the carb problem, but Im hoping it should hit 8200 rpm since before when it hit 7300 about it didnt sound like it was running smoothly which would probably relate to the carbs for one getting more gas then the other, if that makes sence. I will let you all know what it reaches once i get it out again.

If the boot wasn't tighened down you might of been getting more air in 1cly which would cause it to run lean which can cause a burnt piston. If the problem presists and you can still only turn about 7300rpm at you say maybe pull your VES out. I know when my sled would not 7000rpm it was cause my VES were pluged, and when I could hold it to the bar it would bog. Well get to the bottom of this problem

little tip on bleeding the brakes...get a see through bottle (coke bottle) and a ruber hose... attach the hose to the nipple on the caliper and put the other end in the coke bottle (forgot to mention have some brake fluid in the coke bottle so you can see bubbles out of the end of the hose)...then crack the nipple open with a wrench..squeese the brake handle about 3/4s of the way in while the handle is squeesed in tighten the nipple (the hose in the bottle must be under the fluid already in the bottle)...repeat untill you see no more bubbles comming from the hose...IMPORTANT remember to keep adding fluid to the top peice on the handle bars or else you will get a whole bunch of air in the system. (i've found that with cars this method works the best)

I finally got out on the lake with my sled and am pulling about 7800rpm now. It has ran good the last few days, but today when i went to start it and warm it up it ran good until i revved it up and spun the track a little bit on the stand, then it just ran on one cylinder again. I am wondering if it could be a stuck choke or something like that?
I was also wondering what i should set the carbs up for, as I am going to pull them apart tonight. I was wondering what jets i should put in it and also what setting the needle should be on. I mostly run in 0 celcius to -25 celicus on average, but I could always change my jets once it gets colder if that is the better option. I'm not sure if the mods the sled has really matter in the jetting, but they are in my sig if that helps. Thanks alot.

check the post i put up with all the jetting specs, that will help you with your baseline jetting. Pull the chokes out and see how gummy they are..

Sounds better than last time other than it starts to run on 1cyl. You are still off by 400-450rpm thoe. Have you checked to see if maybe you have a loose plug wire or something like that? Did you pull the VES out to clean them?

I have replaced both plug wires and caps, to eliminate that as the possible problem, and the VES are clean and move freely as well, but I dont think that would cause it to run on 1 cyl would it? I just got the carbs off and am going back out to check the jets ect out, I will update later on tonight. Thanks.

No, I have not done a compression check, I don't have a Compression tester. CanadianXCR where can I find those jetting specs that you posted?

Ok...so thats out of the way. No, that would not cause it to run on 1cyl. You mentioned you could not break 7000-7300 rpm so I thought your VES were plugged up by the sounds of it. And you plug wires are replaced so thats good. So is what your saying is that...your sled will run fine on 2 cyls and then it will start to run on 1cyl.
When the sled idles does it have a ruff idle to it and when you start to give it some gas it seems to like fireup on 2cyl again?

UPDATE!! I took the caps off my VES and the one on the recoil side does not move up or down unless pulled and pushed by hand, that is not right, and maybe that is the cause of how it runs and bogs?

You can pull/push the caps back an fourth by hand..the springs inside the caps is what applies pressure to it so they work properly. At low engine speed then pretty much sit low and once you get into the powerband they are forced upward to open the exhaust port more..

I took the one ves valve apart and it had a cracked rubber boot(not sure of the name), so I replaced that with a spare I had and it seems to be working good now. Tomorrow I am going to put the carbs back together and try it out.
My air screw was only 1/2 turn out on each turn, and it has 330 mains, I am running in 0 celcius to -25 celcius usually, are these good settings or what do u guys recommend.
Thanks for all the help.

Good that you replaced that. I cannot remember what my airscrew settings are at... 330 mains and possibly running in -25c seems alittle scary. I would re-jet up to 350 for safety cause at night time the temp can really fall then.
