What do you guys run for carbides? I have 1 1/4 track and studs, will 6in be enough ($45)? Or should I fork out the cash for 8" or 10" woodys($90-$110)?

I'm trying 6" Stud Boy Shaper Bars w/ stock 07 440 IQ skis. The skis came with 10" racing carbides but I want to try the Shapers for the snow.

6" is more than enough. I run between 96 and 144 studs in my 440 with 6" shapers with no steering issues.

What should i do about my jetting? These ****boxes come with 380 mains, correct? What should i drop down to. I'm tired of the constant stutter it has and am narrowing it down to the jetting. Average temps are from about 3 or 4 Degrees celsius to say -13 to -15 degrees celsius. What is safe to run without a meltdown being a hair away.

330s down to -5* F with good fuel at 1000'. 340s to -20* F.
These sleds require you to stay on top of the jetting especially if you have an aggressive clutch set-up. 10-15 degree changes F are significant if not rejetted. A Tempa Flow is a great addition if you would like to jet it and forget it.

So being as -10F is approximately -22C I should be able to run 320's and not have to worry to much? And does this mean when it starts to get warmer it won't be as rich? Sorry for the dumb questions i just can't seem to wrap my brain around the concept. Also i plan on picking up a tempaflow if i can ever get the sled to run properly.

I'm not sure. I'm looking for the best size jets to slap in it that will be fine for the majority of the time. Most of the time it's below 0'C but some times can climb upto 2 or 3'C. I want the safest but lowest you could go?

Anyone have any trouble with bog in powder? I get hesitation, like valves delay to open, but just rebuilt. Only happens in soft snow, hardpack no problem. Powder doesnt have to be deep. It climps to peak rpm, just a delay. I even went back to stock R8 helix, with silver/blue secondary in 2nd hole. Didn't clear up. Belt deflection good.
Anybody else have this. Would moving to 3rd hole in secondary give me the backshift to clear this up? Primary has EPI almond spring. (higher engagement).
Thanks, Nick

310s with long WOT runs?
I rode it for a good 200 miles and ran it at the radar runs we had. Never too many wot runs in my area. Quote originally posted by obee

330's would be the losest I would go for everyday riding and not worry about burndown conditions.
I ran 340's all the time with no issues. It was rich above 15*f.

NickJ- is it a quick, light stutter? We have the same problem- it's not like a miss or bog, and it still pulls full RPM. It just seems to stutter a slight bit maybe in the range where the valves are starting to open?
It started after the rebuild, even with new and clean VES, and seemed to happen in the drifts and powder. Now it does it a little bit now and then. It's not bad, but a little annoying.
It doesn't show up on the plugs, either so we're not really looking at carb tuning, and the secondary spring is in the 3rd hole.
Any way to check harmonics with the flywheel (maybe re-torque) or could it be the timing is a tiny bit off?

Ya its not really a miss or a bog. Pulls hard on bottom and then theres a delay right where it feels the valves should kick open. It feels like a hesitation or delay in the midrange. Not too big of a deal as they will open, but its a second or more, pretty annoying when powering around in the deep powder we have right now. I have replaced my flywheel and stator also, so it could be possible the timing is off.

Has this just started since you replaced the bellows? Did you replace the springs as well?
BTW: How is the throttle response compared to when the UFOs were in the sled?

I've noticed my sled does this as well. More so before i cleaned my valves and replaced the bellows and gaskets. But it still does it once in a while. Kind fo annoying when you need that power, but it goes away after a couple burps.

Dude you need to read thru all of the posts, yes 80 some pages is alot but there is good info, enjoy it...lol..To be safe around here just run 350 mains as it does get warm in the day but can drop down real fast into night. I've been running 350 mains and it's a little rich above -5c but I know when its -20C I'm safe when I peg it. Keep in mind these other guys are higher elevation and can get away with smaller mains. Well already ponied up for the 8" woodys. I can tell a night and day difference from when the UFos wre installed. Now the sled feels wrong, almost like something wrong, due to the decrease in low and mid RPM pull. Feels sluggy until it opens to full 8200.
Also the sluggishness on softsnow seems to clear if I blurp the throttle a few time and then the valves open up, or thats what it feels like. I put new bellows and gaskets on but the springs are original.

Do you have the other cut-aways that came with the UFOs? Go to the 3.5s if you hvae them. I'm running the 17.5 pilots that Lonn Peterson at Thunder Products suggested and it is working well. I haven't ckecked the mileage yet. I've been out of town for the holidays and now have to wait for rideable snow. (Go figure)
I've done a little research on the VES springs and it seems that they went to softer springs on the 440s in later years. I'm going to check out the bellows and springs on mine.
obee,
Get an Aaen Carb Tuning book. (Aaen's Clutch Tuning book is very good also) It will answer a lot of your questions as well as reading the 80+ pages here as previously mentioned.

I have the 3.5 cutaways, but the dealership here is a joke. 17.5 pilots wont be in stock. 25s and 20s were to small to be common and needed to be ordered. Just had to order the rubber band retainers for airbox and a long silencer retainer spring. Been over a week still not in, so waiting a couple weeks for jets turns carb tuning into a pain in the A$$, trying different jets and ordering different ones can turn into a full season thing. Bristow's, largest Polaris dealership in the world, what a complete joke.

I went to Wahl Brothers Racing for my jets. They had everything in stock and I talked to Dave Wahl about what I wanted to do with my sled. He was VERY helpful and never gave me the feeling that he was in a hurry to go. I will definitely do business with them again. Their prices are better than most and I don't feel like I get raped on shipping charges. I feel that their customer service is the best that I have experienced. I went there after having the same problem that you are having with the local dealer.
