Still getting hesitation, right before valves pull open. Belt deflection and ride height in secondary are good. I also drew a line on the sheaves of both the primary and secondary clutches. The secondary was completely gone all the way to center. And on the primary only about 1/8"-1/4" of line left at the very outside of the sheave. So both clutches are completely shifting out. I think both springs are just getting weak.

Got a question about clutch weights. My boys 91 XC 400 Calls for 10M weights, the guy that had it before me has 2 10M weights and 1 10M5. What is the differance and which should be in there. It has a blue spring. And what belt should I be running? It has a 3211042 on it now. I should mention that it has a what I believe to be a 94 XCR SP motor in it. The head cover says XCR special on it and it has the coolant neck bolted to the triangle. Would that head cover fit on the O.G. motor? I need to know because I need to get head o-rings for it and need to know which ones to order. Thanks
The 10M & the 10M5 are supposed to be identical. I don't go that way. I weigh, match, and balance my weights. The 042 belt is correct. You can also run an 045. It is a closer tolerance belt than the 042.
Nick, It still sounds like your sled is upshifting too quickly. How is the jetting? Remember that you have a very small window, 1 jet size either way, with these sleds for aggressive clutching. I'm working on my Tempa Flow and when I get it dialed I will be moving to the UFOs and will let you know what i come up with. It sounds like you lost a lot of responsiveness when you removed the UFOs.

NickJ- we tried shortening the springs temporarily with small zip ties, clamped about 3 coils together toward the top. It seems to pass through the hesitation range more easily, but there is a slight trace left. We're replacing a throttle cable right now, and then we'll check the timing again. I was wondering if the timing could be a slight bit off, or if the mag/flywheel need to be re-torqued.
Not sure what exactly caused it- ran great after the new crank/rebuild. Started one day in powdery snow, so that looked like the culprit at first.
It sounds like a very quick stutter- no bog or miss sound, and doesn't last more than a few quick "taps."

Is anybody running the cylinders P/N 3021011 on their 97 XCR 440. It looks as though they were only used on the 1997 release and not on the 98. Were there issues with these jugs? Any info on the cylinders would be awesome.

The 97's were or were supposed to be taken back to the dealer to have them replaced with an updated engine. You reused your head cover, recoil, ignition, oil pump and ves system.
There was runability issue with the 97 engine, so polaris pulled it for some $$.
I don't remember how much. Ask P-man about his. He's the one that told me all this. I thought I had the 97 engine because my recoil was still the 97 #'s. But after checking my cylinder #'s. I could see where things were changed.
What are you trying to do.

I would think that if there was something wrong with them that Polaris would have replaced the P/N with the new or show them as NLA. It still shows as a good P/N on the Poo parts site.
I found 2 brand new cheap. I have a old 98 motor I bought to use as parts I'm thinking of bringing her back to life. Right now I have a XCR/XC chassis with no powerplant.

I just noticed on Poo parts that it is marked NLA. I am able to get a refund if I can't use them. Does anyone know what the issues were with the cylinders?

damn, I would look into it but I'm just a poor collage kid.. anyways I put in a new secondary spring and mine now runs much better. Put spring in number 2 hole on helix so I still got room to play with

O.K., tried to do a comp. test and both cylinders build comp, close to 115 pounds and it will not hold it. It drops pretty quick. What would cause this? I pulled the y-pipe and pipe to blast and paint it and noticed a milky white liquid coming down both sides of the Y. Most likely coolant mixed with oil. Would a head o-ring cause the bad comp. test? The engine is a 94 XCR SP. Also will any polaris p-85 primary fit on this engine? Are all the crank shaft tapers the same, if not what clutch can I look to get to put on this thing?

By experience, A bad or non sealing o-ring on the gauge hose.
I had a head gasket go on a RXL I owned and it pushed anti freeze out of the bottle.

wow got my jugs back today from the porter who did um. i think shes gonna wake up a lil more now. i was gonna put in new pistons while it was apart. i mean it runs good now just wnt to put the "brand new" ported jugs on. Should i go with polaris pistons? or another brand. who used what on theirs before? btw it was 2 degrees tonite and the lil 440 was fricking ripping, did about 1000 foot pass and shut her down and plugs looked perfect. I have it on the fat side already but i know it wont blow this weekend.

Got a few miles on the 440 this weekend. Engagement is a little low, 4900-5000 with a new HSP black. Going to try an almond/gold. After installing the tempa flow with 370 mains BELOW the shelf, on the bottom half of the air box, with the Tempa Flow screw 1/16 turn clockwise from dot, just a little bit lean. Temps on EGTs just over 1220. Plug color looked ok as did piston wash. Going to install 380s and should be good to -30* F. 159 nozzles a little to lean for steady trail riding. Going to try the 286s. Then on to the UFOs. The Team with 66/44-.46 red/blue and 3 delrin washers works great on the trails. Never a bog from lack of backshift. Haven't been on a stretch long enough to really see how the top end is. 0-85 is good though. It does seem to wear on the soft 074 belt a little more. Can smell belt on take off but maybe will be better when I get the engagement where it needs to be. Clutches are running very cool though. How are your sleds running?

Good to hear, my helix is still on B/O.... I went for my first ride today, put on about 60 miles. First bit of riding the sled felt a little slower than normal, started thinking maybe the new track or twin carbide skis is slowing it down a bit?? Nope, filled up with fresh gas and holy hell she was back! Sled ran great and no trouble to report on. Need to adjust my limiter strap a bit but thats about it. Got stopped at a ride check and the cops were more interested in the sled than my papers, red rocket always seems to turn heads.

drain that side of the crankcase, maybe its filled with fuel. theres a small 10mm bolt on the bottom front half of the case below the exhaust. Theres one on the left and right, pull it out and see if fuel runs out. A drizzle is ok but a stream is not,be carefull not to lose the washer behind it and tighten them up after it drains, they need to be snug ,not super over tight.Upon start up you might foul 1 more plug before it cleans itself out of the remaining amount of fuel in there.Let us know what you find.
My sons 98 XCR440 seems to be loading up a lil bit,It started last night about half hr into it when he was riding.Prob something simple anyone have it happen to them? It almost feels like the fuelpump is seeping thru the vent since i had the carbs apart this yea and leaned everything out,and have about 5-600 miles on it this season with no probs.

xc600rmk,
Have you lined up the 600 vs. the 440? If so, what happened?
VS my 600? i get him outta the hole, but mine is geared down alot with the larger track, give him about 1000+ feet and he starts to go by me .Im kinda worried about him beating me all together when i put the ripsaw on his lol,but then again he only weighs 90lbs to my 230lbs,and his sleds lighter. IDK the top speed on his since it has a speedo delete, but mine reads 95ish and i cant catch him,if anything hes still pulling away.We did that lil test last year on a sweet aprox 2 mile cut soybean field. His head is big and he tells everyone how he beat me,the lil f**ker.

I finally got mine out. I rode it to our radar run track we were setting up.
I can get about 70 mph out of it with the aaen roller and the hsp 50/36s. I think I am going to scrap that helix it has been nothing but problems and hsp is no help at all. I talked to jeremy and it hasn't fix a thing.
Going to put the aaen white and their 50/36 in it and try it out.
Also have the stock clutch with a R8 and orange hsp spring.
Going to see which one is the best and go from there.
When running the aaen and hsp helix I only had about 1/8" of the helix on the rollers.
Ok back to the running. It ran good with the 350's, stock nozzles, 1/4 turn before the dot. Plugs were medium chocolate brown almost perfect. Did a check of them running home friday night at around 0f or coldernot sure but I know it was cold that night. Same color. Going to leave the T-flow where it is right now. Only issue I had was I could turn over 8500 rpm on a calibrated tach.

woodbooga: (WOOD-boog-ah), n. regional dialect, common to areas of New Hampshire and Maine including the towns of Ossipee, Alton, Farmington, Acton, and Lebanon; one who attempts to obtain free firewood to fuel woodburning appliances in an effort to mitigate expenses related to home heating with fossil fuels. Frequently used as a term of derision by non-woodburners who mock the presence of loose bark and other wood waste in the beds of their pickup trucks.
