Hey guys, just wondering if any of you have experience with, or know of anyone who has put larger cylinders and pistons on a 99 XCR 440 (not the SP). I'm in the process of rebuilding the crank and one of the cylinders is toast as well, so I was thinking of maybe adding jugs off an XC600 or 700? Is this do-able, or am I asking for more trouble than it's worth. Thanks for any help.

xcr,
I'm seeing 84-8500 on the big end. I still have an engagement issue to work out, but it is better now. I'm going to try an almond/gold in the primary to see how it works. The W2s are 49.5 but are notched and heavily tip weighted.

I am seeing 86-8800 with s51h, hsp white, 50-36s, epi orange #3, 380 mains,1/8 turn cw on t-flow and 88.2 mph on gps. Can try the s53h's, I guess.

Took it out again with s53's running 8500 rpms and 88.94 on gps. I can live with that. I know I was a tad faster with the 22/41 but that is fine with me.

I am geared for 93.5 mph...so I am right where i'm supposed to be.

That is awesome. I dream of throwing a 136 under the xcr. What size track are you running?

what you you 97/98 guys running for rpms??

Mine pulls 84-8500 rpm consistantly, now who knows how accurate the tach is, but at least its consistant. I know 8250 is peak but mine feels good and I'm not worried about it.

When cold the thing will pull 8500, when warm it is hit or miss, 8000 or 8400 Sometimes it takes a while to get wound up. Feels like it is kinda loading up. It runs well just takes awhile to pull 8500.
Other times it will pull 8500 all the time.
If it was clutching it should do it all the time right??

Yeah sounds like a fuel thing to me, or valves not running the best...

I put on about 80 miles today, sled ran great, trails not bad, some choppy spots, finally got the rear dialed in alot better than years previous, my back is in great shape.

Got a chance to wind her out with the new skis and track. About a 1 mile stretch, pinned going up a slight incline I got 96ish on the speedo, same stretch but slight decline, I got 98ish. This was on hardpack. So it seems with the dual carbide skis and taller track my top end really isn't affected too bad, maybe 1-2mph, temps were a little on the rich side so I bet on a colder day I could still see 100 on the speedo.

The sled pulls great in the loose stuff or even in powder compared to the old track. Braking is improved as well, I also find the sled doesn't coast as long, easier to roll on and off the throttle into corners

I forgot my GPS, I will save it for a cold day

CanadianXCR,
Are you running the Team secondary? What are you running for jetting, clutching, and gearing? Do I understand that the LEDs are not the way to go?

I am going to check my air screws. See what they are set at. I don't see me changing weights or springs as I pull 8500 max rpm. Lighter weights would hurt me and cause more rpm's?

The valves should open before 8000 rpm. Seems like I need to clean it out for a 1/4 mile or so then it pulls 8500 rpm. Not sure really??

Any ideas?

Valves were cleaned when I put the sled away last spring.
Really only does it when warm and everything is at operating temp.

How much rpm can these engines handle?? When everything is cold it would pull 8500+, might try the I-30's and see what it does trail riding??

If it only does it when it is warm, it usually indicates a rich condition. How warm are the clutches after riding for a while. You should be able to touch them for at least 10 seconds.

no issue with touching them, same way with belt. Plugs are chocolate brown, 1/8 turn cw from dot. Might try dot and see how it does?

I threw a new belt on and sled is runnng great. Pulling very hard. But I still have a bog right out of hole for first 20 ft. or so then takes off. Dunno. Like upshift too fast out of hole than goes. Sound primary or secondary?

What is your current set-up?
Engagement RPM?
WOT RPM?
If I remember correctly, you were running a very aggressive helix.

Went out today and looked at the carbs, 1 screw was at 1.5 and the other was at 1. They are both at 1.5 turns out. Mag plug(same carb with vacuum line for T-flow) is a tad whiter than the other with 380 mains and T-flow 1/8th turn cw.

Took if for a few blasts down the lake, pulls 8500 and mid 90's mph. Let it idle a bit and it still pulls 8500. It does idle around 25-3000 till pipe warms up after the 90 mph runs. I ran about 3/4-1 mile each time. I have a nice hard pack path.

Will take pics of plugs, be back in a bit.

Edit:

Best pics I can get.

Check the piston wash. You should see 1/4" at the tansfer ports. Less is better for short runs, more for trail use.

Helix is a 50/34 progressive. Had no troubles running it in the past. For 3 or 4 years now. Just this season giving me troubles. Is there anyway to see if its the primary or secondary upshifting too fast from dead stop? Both fully shift out in a run though, and hold the 8300 rpm or so full run.

If you come off the line ok, then the rpm drops, it is shifting out too quickly. Accorging to pockets, and others, these sleds should launch between 52-5500, go to 8200 off the line at WOT, and climb to 8500 with a hot pipe on a long pull. If you are having trouble with holding rpms, you are jetted too fat or clutching is too aggressive. I found a Polaris R11 with a siulver/blue #2 to be good for all around use. I'd like to try an R12 to see how it works for all around use as well.

No its right out of hole wont climb to peak. Like a stutter for first 20-30 ft or so, then pulls to just over the 8250 marked on the tach (calibrated), stays there through 80+ mph.

jetting should be good. Plugs nice light tan color and running a tempaflow. Carbs may need to be synced though. I have never done it.

Sync the carbs. If anything is off on the belt, (worn, deflection, etc.) adjust/replace. What is it engaging at and what is your set-up? Are your springs sacked out?

My engagement is low. I can just crack the throttle and hold it to 5500 before engagement. But WOT from idle and it engages at less than 5000 rpms. What do you suggest for primary spring. Running EPI almond high engagement spring now. Stock weights

EPI yellow secondary. Not sure of rates
EPI 50/34 progressive helix

Epi yellow is 46/71. I am running a epi orange 49/83. Seems to slow down the up shift compred to the hsp orange, which would up shift way too fast. Hsp orange is 30/70.

Have you taken the helix out and see if there is rust on it. Being it is aluminum and the shaft is steel it may be binding.
