I ran my new (used) 2004 Summit HO 800. Runs good.
However, it sure smells like something is kind of burning, like rubber. I know the brake is not on. What else could it be? The guy I just bought it from had the thing stored for a while... could he have something in the track somewhere that I haven't removed. Feels like the sled slows down kinda fast (compared to my 00 Summit 500) ... so I am thinking there is something somewhere that I should know about and needs to be removed.

Ideas?

Was the exhaust recently painted? Belt could be worn or too tight. Check your track tension aswell. Your brakes could be gone too or sticking. Hyfax could be worn away and your track is burning against the rails.

Also if it's been stored for a long time it could just be all the dust burning off.....(if it's nothing mentioned above)

my 05 gsx that I just got new no miles smelt pretty funky the first little bit I thought the same thing looked everything over greased everything before I even took it out but it went away. And yes the new setup on the ski-doo is almost like having an engine brake was hell to get used to coming from the old sled that would coast they have to run the belts tighter with the rer. that and the secondary backshifts really fast but is normal.

If you have fear you will never live life to its fullest. So conquer your fear if you have one, only then can you truly live free.

05 gsx 600 HO mostly stock.

On brand new sleds youll will always get a weird smell as the fresh exhaust paint will burn off a little. New sleds also have a lot more engine braking to help add to the feel you get from the sled. Once you get used to it youll love it. Just one more thing that helps you get a feel for what your sled is doing at all times.

I'd like to report in now after having put about 100 miles on the sled. My only previous experience has been about 400 miles on a 1999 Summit 500.

All I can say now, after having ridden the 04 Rev 800 in lots of 2-3ft deep powder, is that the 99 Summit feels like a prehistoric toy. I was amazed at the things the Rev 800 would let me do and the trouble it would get me out of. It seems that as long as you keep the throttle on, you just won't get stuck.

I have ridden dirt bikes my whole life and never thought of snowmobiling as something to interest me, but now I see that the possibilities of different snow conditions really provide a unique and fun motor vehicle experience. Nothing like blasting through deep powder... addictive.
