Hello all,

We are in the process of changing some things around here in the near future. I'd like everyone to take a look here:

http://www.snowmobilefanatics.com/server...nation.asp

We would like to try and get something going for this coming winter. It will benefit everyone who visits this site. Please keep an eye on this topic for future update.

Thank You!

Here's what I had in mind. I'm posting it a second time because it's big and I didn't want it all on the homepage.

For hardware I’d like to use server grade parts. I had in mind a motherboard to support socket 771 Intel Xeon 5050 (Dual core, 3 gHz). The boards out there for this chip are dual socket boards, so I can add another chip in the future (which I highly anticipate doing). I will start out with no less than 4 GB of RAM, DDR2 to be more specific. The motherboard I’m thinking of has a build in SATAII RAID controller which supports up to 6 disks In a RAID 5 configuration. I would build a 6 disk RAID 5 array, probably with six 160 GB SATAII Disks. This will make for a total storage capacity of about 800 GB. I know, that’s a lot of space, and more than what we need but if I were to go down to 80 GB disks it would only save a very small amount of money. With the 6 disk array, read and write performance will be very fast. To go along with that will be a 2U rack mount server case with enough room to hold everything.

You’re probably wondering why I want such beefy hardware. Well, perhaps my software configuration can tell you a little more of why. I plan on using a virtualization technology called XEN. It is a Linux based kernel which allowed a person to run virtual machines, or in other words multiple instances of operating systems, simultaneously. This machine would be, at a minimum, running a version of Linux and two instances of Windows Server. The Linux installation would be used for serving up static content to the site (pictures, videos, etc). One of the instances of Windows would be used to provide database services via SQL Server 2005 Express. The other instance of Windows would be the actual application server, which would process all of the requests for pages from the users. Both versions of Windows will be stripped down to run as cleanly as possible. The nice thing about using XEN to run virtual machines of Windows is that I can back up things by simply creating snapshots of an installation. If something goes wrong, I can just start over from my snapshot. I can also create new virtual machines for testing if I’m going to migrate things over to a new version of windows. This will allow me to test and serve production data all on the same machine without having to worry about windows giving me grief. All of this looks very promising. The old server will be formatted with a version of Linux to be used as a proxy caching box which will sit in front of the new server. Requests from users will go directly to the proxy and then pages from IIS and content from Apache will be requested by the proxy box for the user making the request. The users will not actually interact directly with the new server. This will allow the new server to work less hard and handle many more unique requests since a lot of data can then be cached on the proxy server.

With all that said, some are still wondering why I simply don’t switch 100% over to Linux. Honestly, I’d really like to and would in a heartbeat if Linux natively supported asp.net 2.0 and c#. I like programming in Visual Studio 2005 and I like the features that asp.net 2.0 and c# provide me with. It works very well, and I’ve already started developing the next version of the website in these technologies.

What I have in mind in terms of hardware and software configurations will give us the best of both worlds here and be a significant improvement over what we already have.

I'm kindof an AMD fanboy myself, so here is what I would reccomend:

Tyan Thunder K8SE (S2892) mainboard (dual opteron)
1x Opteron 270 (can add another on this board)
2x 2GB ECC REG DDR 400 (add another 2 with another proc)
Chenbro RM217 2U rackmount chassis.

Raid 5 with 6 drives is getting to be 3ware/highpoint territory I think, especially if you want low cpu utilization. What board exactly did you have in mind?

How does the price of the AMD server lines compare to that of Intel? Does it support hardware assisted virtualization like the Intel VT extensions?

Read more about XEN here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xen and here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xen_(virtual_machine_monitor)

(You'll need to copy and paste the second link)

I need hardware assisted virtualization to be able to run Windows under XEN.

I think the AMD server stuff ends up being a couple hundred cheaper, especially when doing dual cpu setups. AMD does not appear to have hardware virtualization in any of their current processors, but they have it planned for their next generation. Their version of it will be called Pacifica.

From what I have read and seen once you go quad core (dual-dual core or quad cpu) the AMD hypertransport really kicks the Intel FSB's a$$. But if you need hardware virtualization it doesn't sound like AMD will have it on the shelves until at least this fall or winter would be my guess.

Seems like as much as AMD made the boat on the 64-bit and memory bandwidth stuff, they are going to miss it on the virtualization. Virtual machines especially Vmware are getting very popular it seems.

So Erick,

I think I have the solution for this as well as future budget needs of the site.
I know that the advertising fee I pay on here is about 1/2 to 1/3 of what it really should be for a site with the number of hits that you get here. 99% of those hits are from people in my direct target market.

So what we need to do, is to put together a media pack to send to people in the sled industry to get them to advertise on here.
Put it together to be able to send out both via E-Mail and through snail mail.
Send it to the big 4 MFGs, all the mail order houses, the aftermarket parts companies, shops, and all that.

Make sure to include the # of hits, the demographics, and all the exposure benefits that they will recieve for advertising on SF.

I'd bet that you could make this into a REALLY profitable thing if you did it right.

Erick,

I have 2 GB of memory laying around. I will get the specs and send them. If they work on your board they are yours. I wish you would have done this 6 months ago, I had a HP DL380 with 8GB and 6 73GB disks that I got rid of. If I run across anything at the office, I will let you know.

I did a little more research and it sounds like the newest Opterons that are in the works will have hardware accellerated virtualization. They will be on "Socket F" and will be availiable this fall. They will be availiable as dual cores with quad-cores coming out next year.

Hey Erick when you get your exact component list picked out send me the list with your costs. I might be able to pick a part and donate it, or get you some kind of discount on some of the parts.

I can't get overfor all the people we have here that we didn't generate the cash already. It's only a few buck guys. Think of it as a 1/2 tank of gas for your sled for this year. Pretend it's winter and you gotta fill up.

I came into some extra cash and already rebuilt my own server, and paid off all my bills including my mortgage. I've been watching this website a lot longer than I've been a member. Sometimes I don't check my email for a while. My bad. Thanx for the good work and keep it up.
