Got An Edge Chassy?
1: unstrap and remove top of airbox
2: Remove trumpet plate and trumpets
3: Pull foam ring off top of airbox
4: Remove trumpet ring from top of airbox (the ring the foam sits around)held in by 3 push pins
5: Glue foam ring back on airbox top with RTV or superglue etc.
6: Put the airbox top back on and strap it down

You've just increased flow without blowing money on a SLP box.
I recomend also geting a powder screen whether to have a stock box or anything else. Polaris or other brand just to keep the water out in high powder conditions. All mountain sleds come with them stock

Anyone can go out and carve around but its the in the woods going uphill, on one ski zigzagin with a leg up in the air givin it all the yank you got just so you can clear the tree beside you knowing your only chance is to stay balls out that parts the men from the groomer chasers.

There are cones in some airboxes. By removing them you actually have made the airbox flow more turbulent. Those cones act like a port on a bass reflex sub box and are designed for a specific harmonic. By removing them the airbox is no longer tuned.

Yeah the cones are basicly mufflers for your intake box. Without them you will hear a little more engine noise etc but nothing much. I should have warned that doing this increases air flow which can lean a sled out a hair but most likely not enough to worry about unless you have already leaned yours way down. Keep an eye on your plugs and pistons for a bit to make sure.
Those cones are kinda like stock mufflers on your truck, theyre to keep it quiet not make it run good.

What? No, those are there to use the pressure waves emitting from the motor as the divergent and convergent cones do in the exhaust. AKA to make it run better.

Okay, pressure waves follow some simple rules, one is that when the wave encounters a decreasing volume the wave is reflected. The amount of the wave reflected is based off the angle of those cones.

Now where this comes in with the intake is the fact that the pressure waves not only work on the exhaust side, but also work on the intake side. So Polaris started putting cones in the airbox for a frequency based on engine RPM, usually WOT. This way when the engine was at or close to that RPM/frequency the airbox would flow more air. Basically it was a tuned intake. So by removing those cones he pretty much threw that all out the window, he could possibly be flowing more air due to removing the foam, but he should have left the cones in there.

i dont see what that foam does in there. i thought it was to soak up condensation lol. they seem pointless to me

The foam keeps snow out. AKA water out.

Triple650Indy is absolutely right that the tuned intake is designed to build up pressure by tuning the horns/cones to a certain rpm. If you shorten them or use larger diameter horns you would increase the rpm at which they are most effective. So in a stock engine, there is usually an advantage to just leave things alone inside the airbox. Sometimes the design point of the horns is for a low rpm enhancement and if you remove them you do free up some airflow at higher rpm trading off that lower rpm gain for a higher rpm gain. I'd say it's worth a try to see if it works for you on your sled. When I put twin pipes on my last sled (01XC6) I yanked the shelf and air horns and it helped performance because peak power was at a higher rpm than it was with the stock single pipe.

Well the descriptiveness of this post is accurate as far as the math involved, but I for one can tell you that I have played with the shelf using different sized/shaped and adding an extra cone and to be perfectly honest in the "field" as it were my 700 ves likes no shelf,no horns, nothing. I use a stock coated pipe and RAD valves, with a Legend head set up. It works for me. Realistically speaking it is not the fastest 700 on snow, but it works out just fine. Now on the other hand my 600 ves HAS the shelf as does my 680 and my 550. Different motors and set ups all require different tuning on the box. So theoretically I do agree with the shelf, but their ARE exceptions to the rule.
