Welp ! Its that time a year again, i have been painting cars in my auto body class for my second year now. The instructor leaves for a hunting trip next week & this is really the only time ive been able to custom paint.(my instructor hates custom painting) so when the cats away the mice will play ! My assistant instructor will be taking over & he is into this kinda painting big time ! last year i tackled a snowboard & it came out really cool, this year took me awhile to decide but its my sleds turn. Since there is a couple topics asking about painting a snowmobile hood i figured id chip in with my experience in painting, So here we go !
First off !
the Ginne pig for this experiment will be my Black 95 indy 500 !
Start by removing all Decals ! This can be done in many ways, but best way is a heat gun & fingernails/Credit card/ & a razor if your careful. Once the decals are all off you will most likely have some sticky residue left over from the decal, remove this with a grease & wax remover, laquer Thinner, or even some common cleaners around the house may take care of the job.
Next, Remove everything you will want to get painted. You could do alot of this stuff still on the sled, but when you want the BEST results, its best to remove everything, & it just makes it eisier to paint. To do this all i needed was a few common tools around the garage (1/4 socket set, screwdrivers,& fingers.) The trickiest parts i removed was the small trim pieces between the side panels, & the front bumper. These were Rivoted on ! i removed these with a Drill, punch,& a pair of vise grips.
Now the parts are ready to be brought to my shop, and get prepped for paint !

First update. Got about 3-4 hours into worken the body now. Went over the whole sled with 320 to make sure she is completely smooth, removed everything i could, Grill mesh, Hood straps, and some rubber grommetts that keep the body from rubbing the other plastic. all this was done with the same tools mentioned above.

Wow that looks awesome, you're gonna get a lot of complements on the trail
*edit*
Did you just wrap the fresh paint in plastic to get that effect?

thats very nice! I am sorta confused as to how you used the plastic wrap.
can you write that up sorta step by step? Thanks!
I am going to be doing my zrt next summer.. I can do flames, but everyone does flames.. what you did is unique and different. I might try orange and green :)

lol yea flames are a little overkill these days, like i said their are many techniques you can use to get certain effects when marblizing. but its basically how you apply the wrap, first off you wanna rip up a bunch of wrap & ball them up so it gets all wrinckly, once you do that you wanna open the wrap back up and lay it flat like i did on one of my pictures, This way when the wrap your using gets full of paint you can switch & use a new peice rather quickly, & you have to keep a fast pace when doing this as you want to have the paint as wet as can be for as long as possble because this will give you more time to get the effects how you want them & where you want them(painting in cooler temps will help this & or over reducing your paint will make it more runny. ( there are also additives you can buy for your paint specially formulated for marblizing, & or their is actual marblizing paint you can buy, but this is the cheapest solution).
once you have all your pieces laid out you can begin to paint, when you paint your top coat your really only gunna use one coat, however when you put it on you want it really thick & wet (almost running the paint) This way you get more coverage & time to play. after you laid it down begin applying the wrap anyway you want, laying it out flat and tapping it with your fingers will give you a more stretched out pattern, or you can keep the wrap kinda balled up and dab it in the paint, this will give a more closer together effect, but no matter how or where you put the wrap the cool thing is no 2 effects are the same which gives it a really unique look. Gooluck to those who try it !! its cheap, easy, & alot of fun with great results !
Hope this helps & glad you all like my work

yes it can, but i wouldnt recommend it, but then again its up to you, it looks like its made of the same type plastic as the gauge cluster, id be worried about scratching the paint under there...
Be sure to add flex to your paint or use paints for plastic
