Hi guy's. I was on here a couple weeks back with "Popular XCR Mods". I was on there saying that I have a buddy with an 03 Viper that keeps whipin me. Well, I went and addressed all of the things you had mentioned about the secondary clutch and VES. I found that my buttons were worn so I replaced them and also that my spring was in hole #2 so I put it into the stock hole (#3), my VES looks fine, cleaned them again just for good measure and inspected and all looks well. I ran it again last weekend and noticed a big difference with my launch, I'm now pulling up to about 8300rpm and it definitely feels better coming out of the hole, so, I'm thinking "look out Viper" I ran him Saturday night on a freshly groomed/packed trail and he whipped me again, not as bad and I hung with him for the first 20-30 feet then he began to pull me pretty bad, now, this time I stayed in it a little longer and finally got to the point where he wasn't pulling me anymore but I wasn't gaining on him either. I still need help, like I said I think that traction is probably an issue, he has brand new studs and mine are worn but I still don't think my sled is performing as well as it should. Could it be in my jetting? I'm running 420 mains. Please help me a whoopin on my buddy like I should be able to do.

Also, just so you all know, I am 110% positive that his sled is bone stock, w/the exception of studs. He's a very good friend of mine who actually agrees w/me about the fact I should be beating him.

first off, do you weight much more than him? second, check your rear suspension, make sure shocks are good and your limiter strap is in the stock location hole.. Actually make sure your entire suspension is in good condition... If he is alot lighter than you, there may be nothing you can do but concead defeat.... If you suspension is good and you both weight around the same you WILL eat him up in any length race...

We both weigh about the same, and suspension is in excelent condition. Just had shocks rebuilt last season, took off the electronic adjustable shock that Polaris had on there and put a RydeFx shock on. Like it much better. I think its in my engine or clutching somewhere. I have another buddy with an XCR 800 that he bought 2 weeks after mine same year, style everything. I've been wanting him to go up with us the same time to run him and see what result he gets, if his is the same as mine, I will just have to concede to defeat and do some upgrades, my feeling is that I should walk him stock.

You'll get better traction and weight transfer if you take out the rear rear scissor stops. The xcr 800s are a great machine and you should have no problem beating him. Make sure you have proper belt deflection, proper track tension, etc to eliminate those variables. Try these things, then go from there. If it's your quest to beat him with a stock machine, then there are those on here that can help with suggestions. A few mods will make that sled even better. -Polaris Doc

I had a similar issue with my XCR not performing well last time out. Not that it didn't run good, It didn't feel right when I pushed it hard. After checking suspension and drive line for problems, I found the clutches out of line, the belt deflection loose and the motor stop with a large gap. It has a brand new belt. I realigned the clutches, setup the deflection and set the motor stop. No broken motor mounts. Got lucky there. Took it out for a ride and Now it feels like a XCR. I haven't had this sled all that long. Still finding the bugs.

if the viper is a stock one he shouldnt be by your side after the count of 2. you should be able to let off the gas.
are the clutches aligned good. is center to center distance ok. is the front left motor mount ok. are the clutches getting hot. how tight is the track? should have some sag in it. an easy inch from the rails close to the rear. is your front end lifting up or are you spinning? move the rear scissor blocks to the rear lower hole. and set your springs to low position. you can also move the front mount of the rear skid down. there is a hole on the inside of the tunnel you can drill out. that will get good lift.
420's are pretty close to what you want for a trial sled. did you buy the sled used or new? mark your primary and see how far from top are you getting. I would open the chain case and see what gears are in there. should be 24-39 atleast. anything lower and you are wasting energy.
nothing goes like 3 holes!!

Your talking about a Yamaha Viper right?...not a Dodge? Like they said belt tension and alignment are key! Double check those. The only thing else I can think of, seeing your sled is in excellent shape, is your VES bellows, make sure there isn't a small leak. Your motor may seem to run fine if it is ripped but you won't make the horses you should. Mine was ripped open for 200miles last weekend, I was beating 900's on the lake still, I was amazed to find that it was even ripped, because the sled seemed fine. Check them out. I really woke it up when I replaced it.

Follow madcows set up I set mine up the same with 4 rounds taken out of the limiter strap and 2 rounds in the front spring and it flat out rocks same jetting also. Don't take the stops out if you plan on trail riding it will send you over the bars in the whoops! Rear lower hole is the best of both worlds. If your studs are shot your motor is going to have no respect for your track. What size lug does the viper have? No way should you be getting beat by a stock viper!

Any chance your drive clutch still has the square wire almond spring in it? If so take it out and run do not walk run to the nearest dumpster and get rid of it and install a new round wire almond in there. Keep us posted, you should be putting a whoopin on a stock Viper that he should not be forgetting about for a while.

I will try all those things. My belt deflection has always made me wonder. What is proper belt deflection for this sled? It seems like it sags quite a bit but it still rides about 1/8" above the secondary clutch at rest. I bought the sled brand new in Nov. 2001, yes, it still has the square almond spring in the primary. I will double check my valves to make sure I don't have a tear that I didn't see the first time. I have replaced 3 left front motor mounts on this thing and am looking into a torque stop, however I've tightened up the stock one and rode 360 miles this year with out breaking one yet.
Yes my goal is to beat my buddy stock vs. stock, because like you all said, it should. I do know that traction is probably a huge issue because that motor puts out so much torque, but I still don't think he should be pulling me. I do use this sled primarily for a trail sled, and surprisingly enough, it rides quite well through the trails for what it is. Thanks for any and all help guy's

AGree with Trip,
Have a look at http://www.snowmobilefanatics.com/forum/...ichpage=1, look for my post. I could not believe the differance.
Even if your studs are worn, you might spin, but should start pulling on him fast..
For Traction, On the rear skid, consider dropping the front suspension mounts. It's one inch below the orginal, and the internal brace is already drilled.
Ignore all the fresh new rivots because I swapped to an edge skid, but you can see what I mean.
Let out your front limiters a bit too. These two changes should pull the skis. I like a lot of ski pressure as I hate trees. In this config I ran about 1/2-3/4 of an inch of thread showing on the limiters bolts.
For hard launches play with the rear coupling, I have tried removing the rear blocks, but on the trail it does'nt couple corectly.
Let us know..
When in Doubt, gas it
