'03 700 SKS; When I ride in powder and snow comes up over the hood, the engine suffers considerable power loss, runs roughly and dies at idle throttle. The problem eventually clears up if I keep riding (out of the powder) or if I put the sled in a heated garage for a bit. My sled has the screen kit and I do close the two screens that can be opened and closed but that still leaves lots of places for the snow to get in. So what's the deal? Is it just a matter of sealing things up? I heard all the vents can be blocked safely except one (the one above the brake). Is this true? Any insight, tips, suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Does your sled have powder prefilters on both sides of the hood where the intake foam is? I had to put them on my sled. I think polaris didnt start putting them on from the factory untill 04. Tey are just a super fine almost silky fabric that goes over your intake foam inside the cowl. It repels water and snow but flows air freely. Closing the vents is mostly to keep the powder off of the pipe. A cold pipe will cause the engine to load up. the other vents dont really need to be closed.

Anyone can go out and carve around but its the in the woods going uphill, on one ski zigzagin with a leg up in the air givin it all the yank you got just so you can clear the tree beside you knowing your only chance is to stay balls out that parts the men from the groomer chasers.

I'm very interested in hearing peoples reaction to this one, I have an 01 XCR 800 with the same problem, it acts like its on the verge of fouling a plug, Its done this since it was brand new, I've tried a bunch of stuff like making plates that block off all of the vents but that just made the sled run hotter and didn't solve anything, I was wondering if this was an exhaust back pressure problem? I do have the SLP nylon prefilter and it doesn't help, although its easier to clean the powder off of the filter.

I just have the stock intake foam on either side of the bars. Could there really be THAT much snow getting in through there? What kind of prefilters does everyone recommend?

I am very familiar with this problem. What happens is the air bleeds in the carburetor ice over which causes the engine to injest raw fuel rather than a mixture of air and fuel.
The only solution for the problem that I found was to tape over all of the air vents on the front of the hood. (this can be done on the inside so it looks better. This keeps more heat under the hood and keeps the carbs from icing up. Virtually all liquid cooled sleds have had this issue but some manufacturers put carb heaters on to solve the problem. The vent shutter kits help but are not as effective as taping over the vents.
By the way, once it is iced up you can cure the problem by pouring hot water over the carbs to thaw the ice buildup. Usually if you get some heat built up the situation will clear itself if you let it shut down with something over the hood to keep the heat in.

If your out riding hot water isnt always available. This may sound sick and stupid but trying taking a whiz on them. Ive had to do it before after having carbs freeze up. Works like a charm.

Sounds like you may be jetted real rich for your area. That or your airbox vents are getting blocked. Carbs may be freezing up.

The polaris ones are good.
Mine after i put them on has never got icy carbs and i ride a lot of deep powder. Like snow comming over the hood for a couple hours straight. Also the foam ring that seals your airbox to the hood needs to be there and in good shape. Look at the black plate in your airbox with the boots on it that slide over the carbs. Sometimes on the 800s and the 700s due to more suction this plate will warp leaving a gap around it for snow comming through the vents to get sucked into. Just another thought.

I'm not sure that my carbs icing up is my problem, last weekend we were riding on a hard packed trail, sled was running tip-top, jumped into a field with about 3 1/2 foot of powder, rode into it slow as to not get snow up over the hood and as soon as I matted it from a stand still, it started running this way, thats what its always done. After playing around for a bit, jumped back onto hard packed trail and it cleared up instantly. It almost seems as if my exhaust is being blocked by the snow and when I get some clearance between it runs fine, not sure if that makes any scense.

I have had similar problems with this as well. The only fix for it is to close up all vents possible and make sure there is no powder snow making it into your air box. I am also going to put on k&n air filters and get rid of the big old clumsy air box. I know lots of guys who do mountain riding and all they use are aftermarket air filters. As bossman pointed out the plate in my air box is warped due to suction. Check it out, i'll let you know how the aftermarket air filters work for me.

ok my next guess is your VES bellows is blown, check them out. These are something that if they are torn a little they will only affect the sled once in deep snow! had the same problem with mine and faught with it forever before I cured it with a new bellow.

I had same problem on 05 700 RMK. Even just being in the powder a little bit would foul it all up. Fixed it by using duct tape to seal up around plastic pan on the bottom of the headlight and dash housing, on the underside of the cowling.

Gotta remove the plastic shroud on the inside of your hood that covers the backside of the gauges and headlights and seal it up properly. Powder snow finds it way into your air intake and gets to the carbs and enriches your sled. More foam or duct tape works good.
