Went out riding today on the swithcback, got 4 miles into the back country, started taking runs at bowls. Couldn't keep the R's up, it kept backing down, than just finally died... pull the plugs, clean brown, no metal.. Check compression, (thumb test) both sides good. Start it back up, runs for a sec, than DET kicks on and shuts down. there was a fog coming out of the carbs? I grabbed the primary clutch, and it moves all around, very loose, lots of play... think it blew the PTO bearing. I was wondering if this has happend to anyone else with a 700 VES? I know I have to tear the motor back down to the crank, and get all new bearings and have the crank trued... oh boy, looks like i'm out the rest of the season, the hole in the snow i keep putting money in just got alot bigger... haha.

I would bet you toasted a crank bearing or bent the crank all together. The 800 motors were known for blowing cranks, some 700's as well, just not as many. Sorry about your luck.

The 700 will take out a crank, pretty sure you broke a crank pin that holds the counter balancers together. I recently broke crank after a belt failure at 8000 rpm, this puts the crank out of balance and it eventually breaks off.

Did you blow a belt recently?
Do you drive in deep heavy snow and put the machine under heavy load?
Hopefully you shut it down early enough to save the pto side piston,If you broke the crank it's a pretty simple repair, the engine will only take an hour to remove from the chassis,it cost me about $600.00 canadian to have mine repaired.
Good luck with your repair!!

well if it is the pto bearing it is very common on the 800 but the 700's as well. well slp makes a "tough boy" bearing kit for the 700 and 800's polaris engine. if i were you i would look into it for sure. get that kit its like $95 and then you pay the shipping to them and back and then get the crank trued and welded. then put her back together.

Once you get it rebuilt with the wide PTO bearing upgrade, get a one piece motor plate from 1200psi on SnoWest or SLP's base plate. Also get your primary clutch balanced, SLP PTO side torque arm, SLP mag side push arm, always make sure your primary clutch is torqued to spec. Check the torque on the clutch bolt every couple rides.

On the Tough Boy... I don't really think it helps alot as I've seen 800's with the wider bearings shear the cranks as well... That's what happens when you use melted down slim fast cans to make your cranks..

The true fix is to get one of Indy Dans Cranks with his Billet PTO section..

most of the cranks that i have heard of breakin on the 800's also had an improperly torqued primary clutch (loose) FWIW

Thanks for all the help, i think i'm going to sent it to SLP, i've had good luck with them in the past, and i've heard good things about the tough boy kits.. My clutch was torqued to spec by the dealer last time it was off. The motor does have almost 8,000 miles on it, and with a newtop end it might have been to much power for the old crank? I'm chaulking it up to my bad luck... just sucks

Another thing that will cause that is a packed out(mis-shaped) case. The case will flex under load because of the vibration of the motor, 2 piece motor straps, broken motor mounts, etc. Once the case is packed out the bearing upgrade won't help at all. The case needs to be trued or a new case needs to be bought.
