Check it over really well, especially crankcase seals and the PTO driveline bearing. For 1000 bucks, you can afford to fix a few things and still have a pretty good sled, just make sure the expensive parts are not needing immediate replacement!
My friends 02 edge 700's have more problems with there carbs then my PWK's have...
I'v owned a 98 xc700 for a while, its a pretty decint sled. I recintly had to buy a compleat new front clutch because the other one was cracking, and rebuilt the secondary, replace the coolent pump mechanicle seal/bearing, updated coolent pump shaft/pully, and a few other things (spend rouphly 1k on it last winter)and it was an awsome sled, but its been used and abused (needs bulk head crack fixxed and shock tower mounts welded and redrilled) its been an awsome sled, works very well with he rear suspension dropped and a 136 under it, however I'm getting a 99 rmk 700 in a week or two and will be retiring the 98 for a winter or two to fix it 100%.
the 98's do make more power, there ports are different, but nither mine nor any of my friends 98's have ever had a problem with the cylinders. so dont worry about that to much.
there in general, a great, easy to work on machine and will go plenty fast for you. my 98 is still on the original top end, no visable wear on the skirts and it will still hang with a 02 edge 700 no prob.
