That's a lot of miles on any sled. Keihin carbs are not as rebuildable as Mikuni's, you may have issues with the wear parts with that many miles. The 700 that year had 220 cylinders and made a bit more hp than the later 824 castings, but the 220 cylinders are more prone to breaking the port bridges in the cylinders. Check it over really well, especially crankcase seals and the PTO driveline bearing. For 1000 bucks, you can afford to fix a few things and still have a pretty good sled, just make sure the expensive parts are not needing immediate replacement!

My friends 02 edge 700's have more problems with there carbs then my PWK's have...

I'v owned a 98 xc700 for a while, its a pretty decint sled. I recintly had to buy a compleat new front clutch because the other one was cracking, and rebuilt the secondary, replace the coolent pump mechanicle seal/bearing, updated coolent pump shaft/pully, and a few other things (spend rouphly 1k on it last winter)and it was an awsome sled, but its been used and abused (needs bulk head crack fixxed and shock tower mounts welded and redrilled) its been an awsome sled, works very well with he rear suspension dropped and a 136 under it, however I'm getting a 99 rmk 700 in a week or two and will be retiring the 98 for a winter or two to fix it 100%.

the 98's do make more power, there ports are different, but nither mine nor any of my friends 98's have ever had a problem with the cylinders. so dont worry about that to much.

there in general, a great, easy to work on machine and will go plenty fast for you. my 98 is still on the original top end, no visable wear on the skirts and it will still hang with a 02 edge 700 no prob.

98.5 rmk/xc- 99 rmk bulkhead/tunnel, 99 xtra-10 with ad boivin ETS, xc fox shocks in front, fox shocks rear, 98 700 w/ 220's, 121/1" track, 3" riser, skid plate, 41/21
99 rmk7- 136/2" track, SLP boost bottle, SLP can, 5" fly risers w/ all the goodies, xc front fox shocks, fox shocks in rear, 98 seat, skid plate, 41/21, all black

Lets say shes been around the block a few! I would offer him $800 or less for it.The 98 xc7's had either 220 or 824 jugs the earlier 98's had the 220's but later 98's like mine had the 824's you cant tell the difference, all of the First year (1997) had 220 jugs, either one will beat out the other. The 700 in these sleds is an awesome torque motor very reliable. Cant think of any issues with them, there fast and when set up properly handle like your driving on a set of rails. With some clutching and tuning and a few HP parts she will really scream just keep it maintained.Oh if its stock drop your maine jets to 182/182
