I know you mix it 50/50 or until you check it so wont freeze until you lowerst tempurature. But i had a day of running really hot and i dont think i have a leak in my system, but im loosing coolant, and i was wondering. What cools better. the antifreeze, or the water? and what evaporates quicker? cuz i think i lost water and i dumped more 50/50 mix in so that means there is more antifreeze than water.

Bleed your lines out. my dad had the same problem on his sled and there was a bubbel in the line and make sure you have a long snow flap so the snow gets kiked back up there.

Antifreeze has a higher boiling point than water I believe.

Pure water is a better coolant than anti-freeze as far as heat transfer is concerned (has greater heat capacity). Pure water boils at 212F and a typical 50/50 mix coolant will boil @ about 223F. This boiling point is further increase by the pressure the cooling system is allowed to run at.

so running to much antifreeze and less water would just make it not disipate heat as well?

well it is the water that evaporates quicker, i know this because we use water to clean antifreeze spills in the shop.

Get a testing kit...they are real cheap and will tell you what your ratio is...and then just add accordingly...we use them a lot on semis and all of the other vehicles/sleds we have....

To make things easy, just use the pre-mix stuff (I used to manually mix also, now just pour it in). You can also add some water wetter to help cooling.

Water cools better than anti-freeze. But for a sled you need enough anti-freeze so that the water won't freeze over the winter.

just run 50/50 and you will be fine. You arent running a high performance racing sled that requires every little bit of heat transfer it can get. If your temp light isnt coming on, you do not have to worry. just make sure the heat exchangers are getting enough snow to cool them down.

Easiest way to "burp" the air is to get the front of the sled higher than the rear heat exchanger. Then open the radiator cap or bleeder screw, any air in the system will migrate to the highest point. When I change coolant, I will put the sled on the trailer ramp or on the tilt trailer and run it for 5 minutes or so with the cap off, you can feel the rear heat exchanger getting warm. Add antifreeze and you should be good to go.

Water does transfer heat better than antifreeze. But antifreeze also has anti-corrosion properties as well as protecting from freezing. 50/50 mix will protect to -34F, if you sled in colder weather, go with 60/40. Pure water or water with not enough antifreeze protection will freeze and expand. When it expands, it will really tear things up in the water jacket and/or heat exchangers.

Water Wetter does a good job of making the water/antifreeze solution transfer heat better. It will cool your system an additional 5-10 degrees in most cases.

Don't forget to check the water pump and belt for problems, too! It may not be the coolant. It could be a problem with the pump, belt, or impeller. And make sure enough snow/ice chips are hitting the exchangers, if you are on hardpack or ice, add ice scratchers to the rails or skis to get some cooling ice onto the exchangers.
