Hello everyone out there, I was wondering if you could help me with another problem I'm having with my steering on my 1990 Exciter ... I went for a ride last week for 4 hours (what a blast) but found my steering a little lose. I came home and set it up to see it I can tighten it up a little. I read the manual .. and it's telling me I need to remove the motor to adjust the tie rod between the steering column and the right ski. I think thats a little more then I wanted to get into ..(maybe over next summer) so .. I was hoping to disconnect the tie rod from the ski and just turn the tie rods end a couple of turns and put it back. the problem is I take off the nut and I'm able to get it out of the top tie rod but not out of the strut .. I tried to apply a little pressure but still not enough because it hits the crowling of the sled. so heres the question is there a trick to getting at the tie rod or even just getting the tie rod end off so I can turn it a coulple of times (thats all is really needs) .. and I will be adding shims to the Struds for added firmness. but the slack is really in the tie rod between the column and the ski . and not between ski to ski . any help here would be great .. thanks again ..

yes you can just remove the tierod end off. it is fairly easy there is a nut on the tierod end that if you want to adjust it you have to loosen. but to take it off you have to loosen that nut. it is lefthanded threds! once the nut is loosened just turn the tierod end out and there you go!

Thanks for the reply Classicfanatic .. I have taken the pin and bolt off .. loosen the stopper nut (A) and tired to turn the tie rod (B) .. still no go .. does seem to want to turn even with a large set of pliers ..
I'm unable to take the bolt (C) right out (as the book says) as it's built into the tie rod end. I also tired to sperate it from the ski but there is not enough play between ski (D) and the tie rod end

The nut on one side has a left hand thread - it turns backwards. It is made so that you can loosen both nuts and turn the tube to change the length.
Changing the setting on the rods will not tighten the steering up. The adjustment is only for alignment.
There is an aftermarket shim kit available.

Question: If the steering is just "sloppy," handlebars can wiggle without the skis moving, isn't that a matter of shimming the front suspension knuckles right above the skis?

Again thanks for all the interest and the responses it does help ..

Classisfanatic .. I check the bolt and it is one unit .. you can see it on the snowmobile parts (http://www.royaldistributing.com/07/index.php?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=29) page 221..item B

PZ1 the tie rod can be used for both .. toe in and taken the slack out.

Excitabletom .. I like the name ha ha .. The shims will take the slack out of the skis where the join the shock but I can turn my steering almost 2 inches before I even start to move the skis .. so I need to extend (thighen ) extend the tie rod between the cloumn and the right ski and the also add shims .. but I think the tie rod is ceased as I losen both nuts and still can't turn it.. I't keep at it ..
