I belive it, those ski-doo's with the rotary valves are pretty wicked
when the rev chassie came out they actually produced three rev 800s with rotary valves and they decided it was too much for an average trail rider

It sounds so dam farfetched. whats the catch?lol 800 vs 670 ho. Both have the same set-up? Maybe if it was a longer race the Mach would've aten it up but idk. Whats the weight difference between the two???

I'd love to know which Lake in Ontario you were on, seems to me all of Ontario has been under a warm spell for the past week, the lakes weren't safe in the first place, then a solid week of above 10 degree weather wouldn't have helped it. Unless you guys are completely oblivious to the lack of ice.

Hmm, I haven't heard of this before, I doubt thats true because look at those new 800R's motor putting out 149-151 HP way more then 800 with Rotary valves could produce.

Polaris 600's are putting that out now. By the way, for you triple guys, that would be a "twin" 600 as well. lol

Alright, as I have ridden both I feel I probably have a better idea about this than most.
First off, regular 670's were good to 125 horse or there abouts. They were a strong motor.
In 1998 ski-doo came out with the summit x. Ski-doo almost always introduces new engines in the summit chassis first. Fewer summits sold, less warrenty claims should there be a problem. The summit x had the 670 ho motor in it. It was a conventional 670 engine with a different rotary valve profile and 44 mikunis. There were a few other changes but those were minor. Then in 1999 ski-doo went all out with the last version of the S-chassis. The mx-z 670 ho. Same motor in the 98 summit-x. Amsnow was claiming 138 horsepower out of this sled.
I owned one. My father owned a mach-z with the 779 triple. They were side by side to about 90, before the mach-z really came on.
The race he suggested was a 1/8th mile. 660 feet. I believe every word of what he says. On the 1320, I think the mach walks away. Anthing beyond that is mach-z territory.
Weight in these sleds is irrelevnt. They were both bricks.
Enticer, I would love to see the dyno sheets for a 100 hp 670 ho and a 140 horse mach-z.
Rotary valves went away for only one reason. The rotary valve intake had to be mounted very high on the jug which ment the carb had to be mounted even higher. The switch from lake racing and ice-racing to bump racing (I.E. Snowcross, hillcross,) made mounting the engine lower in the sled more desireable. It promotes a lower over all center of gravity. Rotory valve engines are still being manufactured my ROTAX today. They are just no longer used in sleds.
And for the record. If all else being equal, (displacement, bore, stroke) a rotary valve motor will always outperform a reed valve motor. Rotary valve engines breath better.
Now I have a question for those of you reading this, can you tell me who introduced the rotary valve engine in a snowmobile first?

i find that kinda weird.
last year when i had my Fusion 600, i raced my buddy with his 99 Mxz 670 H.O.
i spanked him royally from one side of the bay to the other with a top speed of 102 mph on speedo.

Had my share rotary's, and a good running 670ho is no slouch, that said..
My guess is 800 was spinning like a mad, not a lot of room to make up lost lenghts in 660ft.
Your obviously getitng better transfer and traction it the hole.
The first Rotarys were OMC i believe.
