I just bought a 1984 Yamaha Phazer. When I first got it it had a flat spot when you went to give it above 1/4 throttle when you were taking off. So i cleaned the carbs and adjusted the floats from 10mm to 13mm (The manual says they should be at 11-13mm) and set all the cables (throttle, oil pump and chokes)to were they should be. With the choke on I don't get full performance and it tries to drive by itself, plus it smokes a lot when it is idling. With the choke on I get pretty close to full performance but it still smokes a lot when its idling. Does anyone have any ideas or has this happens to them before?

turn your choke off, read your post

Sounds like you need to look at the clutches and besure your carbs have the correct jetting for your alttitude

Fix it till its broke!

I meant: With the choke off I don't get full performance and it tries to drive by itself, plus it smokes a lot when it is idling. With the choke on I get pretty close to full performance but it still smokes a lot when its idling. Also I was looking in the gas tank and I seen a whole bunch of dirt, so I am wondering if the fuel filter is clogged or something maybe and that is causing this.

If it runs better with the choke on the engine is starving for fuel, so your carbs needed cleaning and jetting checked for your altitude
What is alot of smoke, all 2 strokes smoke
Also check out your clutchs (clean and check wear) replace as needed.

The thing I don't understand is that I just cleaned the carbs and adjusted the floats so more gas would come in. I do think that the dirt in the gas has clogged the filter and that would make it starve for gas maybe get a new filter too. I'll probably take the gas tank off and clean it on Sunday. If it works better after that, I'll look at the clutches too. Maybe adjust the jetting too. I know all 2 strokes smoke but this smokes ALOT.

I had adjusted the floats from 11 to 13mm (recommended 11-13), put a new fuel pump and line in, and i just cleaned the tank and filter and the only way it will start is if it been in a heated garage for an hour and you pour gas down the cylinder and still runs like what I explained in the first post. I am starting to hate this thing a lot so does anyone have any idea what is causing this? I'll check the compression soon too. I'm also going to take the carbs to a professional or buy a carb kit for it and adjust the floats back to 11 mm.
