Hi the lower bearing went and also broke the chain on my 91 Indy trail. I took the chain case off and had the shop replace the bearing, they said this year did not take a seal on the back side of the bearing.

I put the case back on, installed the chain, put a new seal on the cover and proceeded to put oil in to the bottom fill hole. Most likely it leaked before I took it off... It leaked oil slowly out somewhere from the bottom where I cant see. Im assuming the cover isnt sealing well but I guess it could also be leaking pask the bearing too. THe drive shaft is cogged and the bearing is round so its got holes all around it so why wouldnt it leak. Im mechanically inclined, but havent worked on sleds much so dont know how this should be.

Ive read some threads that have said not to worry if there isnt any oil in the chain case, just to add some heavy gear oil occasionally to keep it wet as its similiar to a motocycle chain which is just kept greased and is fine.

Any help will be very much appreciated.

THanks

~ Phil

If your chaincase leaks, you could get oil on your rotor, affecting brake performance. There should be an oil wiper behind the bearing. It's green around the outside, and black in the centre. What I'm talking about is item 79 in this diagram. Click this link for all part breakdowns -> http://parts.polarisind.com/Browse/Browse.asp

There were 2 chaincases that year depending on your serial number. One of them is the one pictured above, but it sounds like you have the other one which does not have seals.
It has 1 o-ring. That o-ring should have been replaced. #22 in pic.

Hi Guys thanks, the sled shop looked it up and said there wasnt a seal of any kind behind the bearing. I cant see your pic ACEXLT but the first diagram Tyler posted looks like my case. How can I tell what case I have?? When I took the case off there wasnt anything behind the bearing, would it have gotten chewed and spit off the shaft? Looking at the parts blowup your link sends me to that looks like my chaincase.

Thanks

HI Again, more browsing on the Polaris parts site and I see the second diagram for the chain case, looks exactly the same. THe part you mention ACEXLT #22 is on the upper shaft. THe case is leaking without the track turning, just sitting still and oil leaks out from the bottom so I dont think its coming from there though I wonder if they put the oring in......
