Hey
what Im wondering is, I plan on repainting the trailing arms, all the bars under belly pan yellow. After sanding/priming, what kind of paint will hold up for a while? Its starting to rust on the trailing arms and need to fix that before it gets structural. thanks guys!

^^^ Same as above! By the time you buy all the materials to do the base coat clear coat and make it look good! You will have spent more money than to have them powder coated!!(Not to mention the time)And if you want some other colors on there, slap on some vinyl stickers.

wow, that does sound expensive. But, its worth it to me. I cant stand to see rust on my sled. It really makes it look old and drabby. I keep it uncovered in the garage during the summer months as a "garage ornament". Nothing better than an ice cold beer and a sled looking pretty during the summer.

okay, so I have decided to pass on the powdercoating. I want to do all the work myself and it seems like something Im not able to do without the right equipment. Soooooo, hypothetically, if one were to paint the parts, which paint would one go with? Doesnt have to be something that lasts the life of the sled... just looking at sandblasting, then spraying and apply the decals. any recommendations on paint??

After sandblasting use some Picklex 20 to convert the rusted metal.
I use Matrix paint, good price and nice results.
BTW I'm painting my front end this spring after the riding is done. I can't stand having rusted parts on my sled either!

awesome! I'll have to check this paint out. I found some nice yellows in the rustoleum dept, but I feel like im trying to take the cheap way out.
btw, do you happen to have a link maybe? I googled it, but came up with some out of sight prices- basecoats for cars and stuff like that.

I've always had really good luck using actual paint thinner/remover, as sand blasting will actually take away steel and weld (as little bit as it is). As far as painting goes, I've always used rustoleum paint and using a trick of my own...heating before and after every coat (i.e. heat-prime-heat-prime-heat-paint-heat-paint-heat) while only going up to maybe 150*-200* in the heat cycle. Not sure what exactly the heat is doing, I just know that it cures really strong.
I like to ride. Even if you have a Doo/Yami/Cat/Poo, so be it. I bought my snowmobile to have fun, not to tell everyone mine is better than yours. My preference...POLARIS, BABY!

good point on the sandblasting. thanks for the heat tip. I was thinking about heating as I was doing it, just wasnt sure if it would make difference or not.

I know with auto body they recommend the paint and metal be the same temperature when applying. But as far as heating it up afterwards that helps to bake the paint on there just like the pros do. I painted the cowl hood of my truck for about $250. But that includes first timer mistakes i had made. Call some of these places by you and see if they have Matrix paint or something durable like Dupont but cheap. Listings
Do you have a spray gun and what not?
