Hey guys, as you know, i recently picked up a 2000 xc-sp 500 anniversary edition. This sled definately hauls ass for a 500. Purchased some synthetic oil for it, bought some gas and went for a ride. Approx 40 miles. After getting home i checked everything over to make sure all was good. It swallowed a good amount of oil, infact it brought it down to the "ADDICT" line, from being right full to the rim. Gas was also just above quarter tank! Which is worse than my old 700! haha. Wondering what i could be changing, and how far could i screw in my oil adjuster without it running to lean?

Welcome to the XC 500. My friends 99' XC 500 does the same exact thing. We made a 4 mile run at 70-85mph the whole way on a road with 4" of fresh snow on it. That was 1/4 of a tank. ( the 1st quarter that goes the fastest )

Check your jetting, you could be just sending all that gas and oil out the pipe without burning it up.

AK, wouldnt the sled be running like junk then??? My friends sled will keep up right next to me top end ( not low end though, but its still pretty fast off the line for a 500 ) and he burns a lot of gas as well.

I'd also check to make sure that its the appropriate gas cap.

It seems sluggish on bottom end, which i'm assuming is because it's really rich. Not sure though.
Also, i wasn't taking it easy on the sled. Probably 140kmh, reving at about 7400-7800, compared to my old 700 that would be doing 140kmh reving around 6000. haha

Smaller engine works harder for the same riding/work out it had as your 700.

My 700 45th can do about 110 miles to a tank, If i dont move my thumb a hair.

If I rode like Id like to, probably get about 75-80

I usually get 90-93 being able to open up here and there.

EDIT: If its sluggish, check your plug color, shoot for cardboard brown. Let it idle for a couple minutes, If it flouds out its rich.

It doesnt have to run bad, Polaris is notorious for sending sleds out from the factory far too rich. They all could usually go down a couple jet sizes at least. .Read your plugs

Extreme, I dont care about how fast your buddies sled is. Stop referncing everything to a race. If thats how you diagnose problems with a sled you are a moron.

install a tempaflo. It not only improves gas mileage but helps keep your jetting spot on which will use less oil and give you better, consistent performance also. I have one and i get about 12-14 mpg depending on my riding and oil consumption is less than a quart every 100 miles.

Doesn't kill itself when it's idling, but it does idle kind of low. And plugs are running a chocolate brown, still a bit to rich, but i'd rather have it rich than to lean, so i'd like to find out how many turns in i could go on my oil adjuster.

If it is running rich just jet the damn thing, dont start messing around with the pump first. You should only adjust the pump as a last resort if jetting isnt working for you but it should......again read your plugs they will tell all you need to know.

welcome to my life. lol my sled is hard on fuel too. really hard. i can go with my buddy who has a 97 indy 500. and after a 60-80 mile trip i will put in 15 to 20(can$) bucks more fuel. it sucks but hey as long as i am sledding i dont really care all the much. but my sled doesn't use that much oil i can fill up 3 times before having to add oil though.

Haha yeah, i'm happy enough to be out riding, so it doesn't bother me that much. I was just curious as to see if this was the norm for these little 500's.

That mileage sounds horrible. With that type of riding I get over 10mpg on my 700 and its horrible on gas compared to my buddies M8. Are you sure your tank isnt leaking. Does it have new plugs? clean fuel lines? clean tank? free airflow? adequate spark? clean carbs?

Tank is not leaking anywhere. Carbs were cleaned before the purchase.Fuel lines look fine.Spark also appears to be decent. Maybe i just need to lay off the throttle.haha.

Once you check your jetting and carb settings and they are dialed you will still use quite a bit of fuel.

Think of it this way, on the 500 you can spend alot more time with the throttle to the bar than you would on a 700, I have the same consumption issue going on with a 440 vs a 600. On the 600 there are fewer areas that I can keep the throttle pinned. On the 440 there are plenty of areas that I will spend several minutes held to the bar or near to.

You also get to see this on 250F vs 450F dirtbike service intervals, if you are a heavy rider on a smaller engine you will be wearing on things more.

I figure both my 01 Xc500 and my fusion 600 get about 10 mpg. of course that depends a lot on the driving your doing.

But that's what I go by, when figureing out next fuel stop.

Don't even look at the gas gauge. Fill it up and see exactly what you got for mileage. Do the same with your oil. If you actually used 8 gallons of gas and 2 quarts of oil in 40 miles, something is very wrong.

That's a very quick sled for a 500 and yes it sucks the gas harder than crack-whore on speed.

FROSTBITE had one. Wish he still had it. It was a fun sled. I'm pretty sure he misses it, other than the fuel economy.

I dont think I put my point out there clear enough. I think I worded it wrong. Smaller motor making a sled go as fast as sled with bigger motor = more rpms = more times gas sprays = gas consumption

And yes, plugs should be brown. white means to lean. and black means to rich.

i wouldn't go by what the other owner said about cleaning the carbs, as i would pull them off anyways. while your in there drop the mains 1 size maybe 2 and turn the fuel screw in a little bit until you regain low end throttle responce. i say this because fuel screw controls fuel flow from idle to almost half throttle, and mains control fuel to wide open, either way your going to get better mileage. example my 800 as you know was getting 50miles to a tank now im running almost 120 to a tank with jetting and clutching. good luck
