Ok my sled handles well on the nice trails and even in a little snow, but when I get into some deeper stuff it slows way down and kindof saws through the snow, instead on climbing up on it. What can I do? I looked under the hood and it says to move the front shock and move the little block forward. I moved the block forward but I didn't move the shock. I still want to ride the trails but if I find some powder I want to be able to ride in it also. Right now I have the front shock springs set almost at the bottom, the limiter straps are let all the way out, my front blocks are set in the bottom forward holes and the rear blocks are in the rear bottom holes. It is a 99 xc700 so I think it is the xc-10 suspension, I don't know if it is different or not, I seem to remember it is though. I guess I am looking for a happy medium setup.

My '99 is a trencher too...it kinda sucks cuz it isn't fun to play with in the powder. I have it set up for drag now so that is part of it but the track is original and has no bite. I think it will get a 136x1 1/4 next season.
Polaris...it IS the way out!

How do you have it set now, front and rear, just for comparison? Are you planning to extend it or did you already do it? I would like to extend mine also.

I think you've hit the problem, my XCF acts the same way, in the deep stuff it just doesn't get the track up onto the snow.
I rode a friends 700XC before and after he went to a 136, before it would ride butt deep, after it really gets onto the snow.
I am going to be in the market for a 700 XC and going to 144 with it during the summer so its ready for next winter. Would do the XCF but that 440 just doesn't have the engine I need anymore.

So I take it no one has ever had an xtra 10 that has successfully been run in powder?

I have xc-10 on my 00'Rmk and from the sounds of it you have it set right for the powder!I ride with a stiffer shock when playing in the powder seems to keep it from sagging to much! But still my 136x2 is not enough for the powder we get here I just cant keep up with the guys riding the longer tracks! But get me on the trails and they cant touch me!Hopefully I can get a 151 under it this summer! I think you need a 136 and it will help you out a lot!Mine goes, just not in 10ft of powder straight up where all my buddies like to go!But I can boondock and play in 2/3 foot powder no problem!

Thats the problem, if we do happen to get, say a foot of powder, its to much. All the sled does is saws its way down to the bottom. Is there anything to change in the setup to get it to climb up to the top more?

You've done the set up for powder, it just can't help you too much. In the end there is a finite amount of grab that your track has on the powder, when that is exceeded by the force it takes to push your way through the white stuff it will start to dip deeper until the lugs hit something firmer, or if they don't you'll get stuck.
Short tracks are just overwhelmed. To really rock in a foot of pow you'll want a 136 with 1.5"+ or a 144 with 1.25" I'd personally go 144, with 1.25" lugs studs if you need em, more lug if you don't. And I would set the track so the rear tips of the track were off the ground slightly when the sled was level so that the track would let go more when riding trails and hard pack.

Would it effect anything if I moved the front track shock to the upper mounting position and ride it on the trails like that?

your problem is the 121" track... you need a 136 for a multi purpose sled. 136 should be plenty... the ONLY place you will need a bigger track is on straight up hills or drag racing in powder... other then that, I can usually out ride the people in my group with 156-151 track with my 136. all a matter of keep'n it WFO and putting a grin from one side of your face to the other

Hey dtmmil, I feel your pain. I put an xtra 10 upgrade into my 1990 Indy 400 this season. I'm having a lot of trouble getting it to transfer. When I take off, it spins wildly and I don't really get any traction. The skis never lift at all, and I don't feel the skid collapsing much. In deep snow it trenches wildly like it's trying to dig it's way to China. I know my sled can perform way better in deep snow than it does. In fact it did quite well in deep snow with the old suspension. I'm sure something can be done to yours to get better results. I just don't know what it is. If I figure out anything, I'll be sure to keep you posted.

there's really just not that much you can do to the suspension to compensate for lack of grip on the snow...

I extended my xlt to a 136 with a 1 1/4 hacksaw and it made all the differnce in the deep snow and climbing hills.I put the skid in the drop bracket in the rear for some xtra clearence. On my skid I removed the rear blocks alltogeather .Now when I get off the trail and in to some powder I have enough track,
and weight transfer to get the skis up on top of the snow. This would have to be the best mod you can do to a sled. Now that I have run almost a whole winter with a 136 I will never have another sled with a 121.The whole thing cost me about $600.00 including the track well worth the money. The only thing I find now is the 600 even with the gear changes, could still use a little more power in the deep stuff. On my skid I tightened the rear limiter straps and loosed the front a bit. What I found now is when I hit the throttle the skiis come up about a foot off the ground for about 15 feet on the hard pack.In the deep dnow when I hit the throttle I can feel the skiis come up and it planes out ontop of the powder better.Take a wrench with you on your next ride and play with your suspension adjustments a bit.

Anyone suggesting a sled needs a 136" track to find powder and be able to carve is full of it. I carve on my pig of an RXL with a 121 X 1.25" track. I'm not saying you need a 1.25: track either, I carve on both my parents ski-doos like nothing. Both bone stock with .75" tracks. I think you should keep playing around with it.
Cause I don't give a rats about who took second or 12th for that matter your just the next loser in a long line of many losers.

I put on all my miles last year in the general vicinity of Island Park Idaho. Snow wasn't as deep as you see in the sledfilms last year, but I rode in a lot of deep snow nonetheless. 90% of the time I was on my 121" Edge 600. In December when I was first out there, my skid was set up for trailriding. I couldn't carve worth a darn, but I made it through the deep snow just fine. After a little research, I switched some settings on my suspension and carving became a reality. My February and March riding was just great on the 121". You really get a crash course on how to ride deep snow when you're on a short track. I get sick of hearing that it's impossible to run a short track offtrail. That is just not true!

I have a '96 XLT with the xtra 12 skid. not much different than the xtra 10. I removed the rear limiting blocks and stiffened the front track shock to about 3/4 tight. we just had bout 14" of fresh powder and with the stock 121"x .991" track it seemed to help get the skis to the top of the snow and I could carve a little. This compared to not being able to carve at all before the adjustments. however I plan to put on a 136" x 1.5" track this summer so I can keep up with my buddies in the powder, they all have 1.25" tracks and seem to do much better. The other major difference is their tracks are segmented where mine has solid bars.

I have an XLT w/ Xtra 12 ski as well, quite a bit different from the Xtra 10 actually, its a falling rate, Xtra 10 is a falling rate, different travels, different designs.
They are different beasts through the deep stuff that is evident.

My Storm with xtra10 was amazing... In almost 2 foot of powder, I got traction till I slowed down. I started trenching from a stop, leaned all my weight to one side and gunned it while steering in the same direction and dug myself right out. With a .91" track and 1" studs.
It's ALL in the setup. (I wish I knew how to tell you to do it, I bought it setup that way...)

96 - XLT/SP with Storm 800 trip/trip and now EFI - FrankenStorm II lives...

05 - Edge 800 long track - Stayin' stock for now..

dtmmil, what size lugs and type of track are you running, my 98 xc had the x-10 121x1.25 and it did great in the powder. the only trouble i had was when i took off from a stop i would dig. i went to an edge with a 136 kit with 1.25 and its alot better. i'm ordering a 1.5 this summer.

Thanks for the input, I have the stock track .90 or whatever it is. I would like to extend it over this summer if funds are available. I will try some of the ideas that have been posted here if I can find any deeper snow, or if I can get out anymore this season.

Does your sled trench???? If so have you tried running a shallower helix?
Alot of the clutch set-up on here are for hard packed trails not loose powder.

i didn't think mine was too bad. i havent been in really deep snow but i can get through 2-3 feet of snow quite well. but i also have my suspension dropped about 2" to. that might bee the reason. plus a 1.25" track.

what are you running now???
You could try adding a few .030 shims behind the snap ring, each .030 shimm you put in will change the initial ange by 1.5*. SO if you have them try a total of 3 and see what it does.
