have you checked to see if the track is too loose? that would be the first thing I would check. Also is it ratcheting on the drivers? That could be the noise you are hearing. If that is the case there should be bolts on the rear idler wheels that you can tighten up and push the wheels back, thus tightening you track

so when it wanders does it move to one side? preferentially?

Can you mark the track when its furthest to one side, then ride for awhile advance it again to see if it ends up in line again?

There are 3 things I would check.

1. Track tightness settings should be equal on both sides, that is if the rear axle is not adjusted evenly you will have problems. This sould be done by putting the rear end on stands, run the engine and slowly spin the track for a minute, then adjust the tensioners (if its super tight i'd go loose first). the side that the track shifts towards is looser.

2. Track severly worn or warped, if that mark you made consistantly is close or far and doesn't move randomly between I would consider the track being old and stretched unevenly.

3. And this one is really possible, how are your driveshaft bearings? Check them lately? It is possible that your bearings have worn out on one or both sides and the drivers are uneven, and therefore the track is unevenly tensioned.

If it just slides to one side loosen up the opposite adjuster, or tighten the side it moves towards.

That's the name of the game, if you haven't done this you just have the track out of adjustment.

I'd run it as loose as you can with out ratcheting, and then get the adjustment so that it doesn't wander to the one side. No mark needed, I assumed you had attempted to adjust tension to get rid of it.
