Hello Everyone!

I am new to the forum and am hoping you all can help me!

I was cranking down the road on my 96 XLT(racing my hubby's Ultra) and about 110 when the belt shredded. I pulled over and we changed the belt but I noticed it had a loss of power... upon quick inspection noticed that the exhaust on the 1st cylind. (it is piped) was not not producing any heat and the other two were hotter than can be. We have spark and when the pistons are moving well. Any suggestions where to go from here?

FYI - It was rebuilt before this season, bored out and new pistons and new oil injectors.

On a side note I did also notice that my fuel pump is not bolted on any longer... weird... just hanging by the hose... and there is a little fuel spilled out around the area... could there be (grasping at straws here) an issue with gas getting all the way to that 1st cyl?

Thanks a TON!

Look for kinks and/or twists/tears in the fuel line because the pump is hanging. If fuel leaked out, there IS an issue there somewhere.

BTW, I seriously doubt it was 110 MPH you were talking about.. My 96XLT with an 800 triple/triple won't do 110 mph with stock gearing and I doubt even a piped stock motor would do it with gears.

Do you have compression on the suspect cylinder? I'd check that first. Gas and spark maybe, but you still need compression. Run a test on the cylinder and post the results.
I've had the fuel pump just hang with no problems. Must have come unbolted from the recoil housing.

Yes the fuel line is where we started but the gas shut off valve is closed/locked open so I either need to bypass it and drain the gas, or wait for the part to come in to replace it before I can check the carbs for a clog etc... just my opinion... I saw a sled burn to barely nothing a few weeks ago on the trail (thank goodness no one in our party) so I'm a little intimidated at the moment with Fuel.

Just didn't know if anyone else has expierenced something similar! I already asked my old man but wanted some add'l info as things have changed a bit since his "hay day"!

As stated above it is not stock. It is bored, jetted, piped, clutched and geared ... I had it done before this season. My oil injectors seized up last year promting a complete re-do. I liked having it stock but if I wanted to keep up with my dad (we raced sleds growing up, so sleds were "spiced up" a bit! Speed is not a fear of mine) I had to step it up a bit, but still look stock on the outside was my goal. I wasn't gonna let him beat his little girl any longer, 29 years is long enough!

Honestly I do not blow smoke .. I would not say something if it is not fact, nor would I inflate the truth... he he

Thanks for the help!!

Yes Compression in all three Cylinders. 110 when dry with compression gauge and 120 when a little oil squirted in the cylinder.

I don't know how long the fuel pump has been hanging in there ... I can say I am bad that I do not raise the hood each time before I head out... I do I suppose to check the belt... but really nothing else if it is sounding and running well... I guess maybe I should, I am honestly laxed in that area.. lesson learned here!

Thanks for the help!! I appreciate it!

if it revs up or picks the cylinder back up will have to replace the cranksaft seal

^^^ Not a fun job if it's your first time.

And no offense, but the speedo may have said 110, but those are usually off 10%, which is still 99mph, still booking for a XLT.

No offense taken! Most people don't believe it when I say I had my XLT that fast, but it is not stock... although not a "race" sled either. The speed is true to the word. My husband was up and had it speed trapped at the airport in Grayling a few weekends ago and had it up to 119... he is 215lbs I'm only 130... so I am sure the 110 is correct.

Ok, assuming you're not blowing smoke...

Did you check the PTO seal as suggested? Truly, if it was leaking it should still fire just be lean.

Check your sparkplug/wire/coil/coilwire.. Mebbe the tail of the belt whipped it when it fragged.

Look for anything else the tail might have whipped, like the carb, fuel line, oil line, etc.

A stone cold pipe means it's not firing at all, that's usually either total lack of fuel or lack of spark.
