I finally updated my wife’s and my snowmobiles. After quite a while, searching for sleds and weighing the options, I think I found two pretty good deals.

On Friday, we met a person that had two ’02 XC 500 SPs for sale. One red with approx 2500 miles, and one black with approx 3000 miles. During an initial test drive of a couple miles, the black one was not running well at all. The red one had clearly been taken care of better than the black one, and the red one was a one-owner sled. After another test drive of about 10 miles, I decided to make an offer on the red one. The price we agreed on wasn’t as low as I would have liked, but it was still a decent deal for both of us. Our empty trailer now had one sled on it. My wife was happy because her current sled is red, and she was teasing me that this one will be hers, since she already knows how to drive red sleds.

The seller’s son also had a Fusion 900 for sale. I had the chance to ride it for a few miles. I was really impressed with the chassis, but rather unimpressed with the engine. I’m not generalizing; I’m just speaking of this particular one. I would have liked to find a Fusion 600 to update the other sled, but I just cannot justify the price right now.

On Saturday, I called on another ’02 XC 500 SP. The actual seller was out of town, so we met his wife and son-in-law, who were both very knowledgeable on the sled. This one happened to be red, too. It was a one-owner sled and in excellent condition with approx 2900 miles. The shocks had just been rebuilt, and the clutches and VES cleaned. It ran just as good as it looked. It had 120 or 128 studs (I cannot remember right now), but doesn’t have one single scratch in the tunnel. I figured I’d make an offer, as it was such a nice sled, and within minutes we were loading it on the trailer. I paid the same amount that I paid for the first one. I guess I’m going to have to learn how to drive a red sled, too. Ha ha.

So, my wife and I replaced our ’92 Indy 440 and ’95 XLT Special with a matching pair of ’02 XC 500 SPs.

I’ll probably be asking a number of questions about my new sleds in the near future.

I don’t have any quality photos of the pair, yet, but here is a photo from the ’02 Polaris literature.

You picked 2 nice sleds. They are great on fuel if doing under 40 mph after that they can go through the fuel faster than a 600 or 700. MY buddy has a 03' can't kill the machine and it goes will on the trail. I know you will be happy, may miss the triple bark of the xlt though.

Triples are like fat chicks, When you ride one your friends make fun of ya, but they give you a hell of a ride like its thier last.

Interesting, I'm looking at the exact same sled, year, and color to update also.
Glad to hear good reviews on them.

Enjoy your upgrade.
