We just picked up a '98 Trail Touring. It's been ages since my husband's been on a sled.. took it out for a spin.. can do a quick stretch fine, then it won't turn the track. He said if he gets his weight off the sled, it seems to go, but he's thinking as soon as something heats up, the clutch doesn't seem to work. If left alone for about 10 minutes, it runs fine for a short time again.. also the electric start won't turn over the engine.. anything ring a bell to someone?

Take the sled to someone that knows how to inspect and service clutches. Or do it yourself if you know how. Clean the carbs while you're at it. Make sure the parking brake is not set, and even if it's not set, make sure the brake is not engaged(look under the hood at the pads and caliper).

The local dealership wants $100 - $150 to check it out. We were planning on bringing it in tomorrow but are looking for any insight. The sled seems ok while it's reved up, but as soon as you have to slow down, it loses it and kind of bogs down at that point... until it cools. We found out when we picked it up that it has last year's gas in it. We originally thought it was just a problem with the electric start, which we can work on electrical.. but now not so sure.

Drain the gas and refill, clean the clutches and carbs, I bet it goes much better. Old gas will do that big time, as well as building varnish in the carbs...

We brought it to the shop.. said the battery had frozen at some point and was trash.. also running on one cylinder and they'll strip into it and see if the floats are ok.. maybe about $300. They'll call later today. But while we were there, we did get a run-down on all the specifics of the sled, etc.. which was good.

You could just wait till next year for the battery and save yourself $50-70 bucks. Since its nearly the end of the season why let it sit all summer?

We were going to do that, but want to use the sled this season.. and the battery in there now can't do it.. originally, at first check, the guy at the shop said they would charge up the battery and said to wait until next season.. but they can't do anything with this battery and we still have snow waist deep around here.. so there's still plenty of riding. And at this point, we really do want to get it in decent shape. And no sense in getting the electric start fixed and not having a battery strong enough to start the sled!
