just a little info for you liberty owners. My 1998 XC 600 started to get a lean condition and run strong (stronger than normal!) so i shut it off,and pulled the plugs and they looked new,now I know something was not good cuz they had looked nice a few days ago and they have been in there for more than 500 miles. So i towed it home, and did all the usual checks for lean conditions, and found nothing. So my next guess is it was an oil problem. I pull the pump and the shaft is free and the drive shaft turns good,I pull a line going to the crank and it pumps, but I notice that the line going to the fuel pump is dry....so i figure the fuel pump was bad,i know it sounds funny (to those who dont know, but neither did i) theres an oil line that runs from the oil pump to the fuel pump and has and a check valve (thought it was an extra filter) in there, and as the pump pumps oil, the fuel pump pulses and draws oil into the pump where it mixes with fuel, the check valve holds the oil in the line so it can keep constant oil in the fuel pump. soI fire up the sled hold the pump wide open by hand and it pumps great to the crank but not to the fuel pump. The check valve is 1 way only, you can suck thru it but not blow thru it.I put on a new pump i bought 2 years ago for a spare, fire it up hold the pump wide open by hand and low and behold oil raced up to the pump and everything is A-OK!.lucky i realized the sled was goin lean when it started to run stronger than normal.Likle they say "they run the best right b4 they blow" So check your fuel pump if you have had an engine burn down,or you suspect it may be bad.I believe that it started last weekend when the sled developed a problem loading up excessivily when idling..im sure now that the diaphrams in the pump were going bad and allowing fuel to get sucked into the crank pulse line.I put on 102 miles yesterday so the problem is fixed, and b4 i hurt the engine!

Yes, the sleds with the Keihin carbs, especially the ones in 97-99 used the oil to the fuel pump. Pretty interesting idea. Pin it from idle, the fuel in the pump, carb float bowls, and all the fuel lines is mixed with enough oil for idle, so until the richer oil/fuel gets there, you are under-oiling. Go fast for a while, then go to idle; the oil is over-oiled, again until the gas/fuel mix is burned out of the carb bowls, fuel lines, and oil pump. It's seldom spot-on, not such a good thing, if you ask me.
All Edge chassis sleds have Mikunis that direct-inject oil to the carb from the fuel pump. It's easy to check the other years, if you have 4 oil lines coming off the oil pump, it's direct injecting to the carbs. If there are 3 oil lines coming off the oil pump, one goes to each end of the crank, the other goes to the fuel pump.
