i agree with Achotrod maybe a F5 firecat for your son not the F-series F5 its not AS FAST! And maybe A F6 OR F7 Firecat for you. With good carbides and studs they handle great! They also rip like none other!
good luck

two words
"ski doo"
got mine this year with 2600 miles on it.. (2001 mxz 600)
rolled her all the way up to 4100 miles.... nothing but oil and gas
no belts, no nothing, ... well the pull cord broke, but that was 6 bolts and 3 springs.
I don't work on anything but computers, and i replaced the recoil rope easily.

I do like some Doo's though I have never ridden anything but a REV. Was a bit uncomfy for me, felt cramped when sitting but I am tall so maybe that's why.

Arctic, you should sell your son's, pass your current one on to him, and buy a brand new top of the line one for yourself!

No Way!!Keep the old colt
My first sled was a colt ss 250 and I would give anything to have it back. It's probably in a scrapyard by now. It would have been a constant reminder where I came from and how cool my dad was for getting it for me.

I'm a polaris fan so i would also go for the fusion 600 or a rev. Todays sleds have rider forward ergos and that is what you want. The Firecats are not rider forward until 07 so i would stay away from the cat from 03-06.
The next option would be a rev chassis which started in 03 and was in production until 07.
Thats if you are looking in the used market. The new market i would say any of three will suit your needs and from the sound of it you really only need a 600.

As much as I agree with all the previous posts about the Firecat and F-Series sleds, take a look at the Crossfires. Best sled Cat makes for all around fun and rider forward comfort. In '09 there is a new Crossfire R which is a 14" x 128" track. This sled is gonna be alot like the Firecats were. The standard Crossfires went from a 15" x 136" to a 141" this year.
And I would definately pass the Panther 570 fan to your son and buy just one new one. The '03 Panther was in the ZR3 chassis and would definately be a huge upgrade for him over the old Jag.

03 or newer Trail RMK. It is a very versatile machine, and can go many places.
I agree or maybe one of those 03 RMK 600 136/144 inch track

Are you willing to travel to rochester,ny?
My good buddy has a 2004 Firecat for sale with all the matching clothes, helmet, electric shield, studs in showroom condition for 3800.00.
I would buy it but I'm ex-cat.I would buy a rev or iQ polaris 600 shift.

ARe the crossfires considered rider forward? I didn't think they were since they are like the original F series.

The Fusion 600 is a great sled from what I hear. Got the ponies between your legs and I believe they have the IQ suspension for the front if I'm not mistaken. The REV XP's are getting amazing reviews as far as their "rider forward position". It distributes the engine weight and everything so the cornering is amazing. I got to try one out earlier this year and it is by far
Edit: How much cash can you give? Sorry I just noticed the 6,000 . My bad....

i would go with with an 04-05 500ss. i got mine not to long ago for 3600. it had fly bars and a 4inch riser. it also had c&a pro extreme skis. he is selling his ohter one for 3000. its in good shape except for the track, its pretty beat, the track condition tells you a lot about how the persons rides it though, so i would go with the 500ss or polaris xc edge sp 500.
