I just bought an '89 Exciter 570, have to pull motor to fix joint at bottom of steering column and am cleaning/adjusting carbs as long as they're off.

They are the Mikuni round slide type, and I have some questions...

Sled currently has bowls with a very large fitting on bottom with tubing on it, one is plugged and the other is not (seems as if it would just drain the bowl) and I have a spare set that looks like the bowl in my Clymers manual- has a small cast nipple off the bottom at a 90*. Which would be the better bowl to use?

What is this carb switch the manual talks about? What does it do? I don't think my carbs have them, well something is there but what it is I dont know. Looks like something was broken off and what was still on the carb was rtv'd to seal it.

Some background on this sled...It was running good with a flat spot or bog just off idle that would clear up momentarily with a twitch of the choke. Main jets are 310's (320's are/were stock) Interestingly, this Exciter had a Injection Research Specialists EFI conversion that was removed for unknown reasons by a PO. If anyone knows about these systems I'd be grateful for more info as I will try to put it back on this summer.

the tubes on the bottom 's are suppose to be water traps ,but if you run isoheet ,they really do not do much good ,but those tubes will get brittle and crack or break causing gas to leak, they are used on polaris ,arctic cat, and yamaha sleds that i know of (tubes)

Well, it turns out that the carbs have jet extenders on them and those large fittings are needed to clear the lowered jets.

It also looks like the TORS (thats what they are!!) carb switches had been removed and replaced by a cobbled up plug.

Anyone see a problem with connecting the float bowls with tubing rather than doing the water trap thing?

the main reason you have a water trap it to keep the air going into the carbs at an even temp. so on you dont realy need the water trap thing!! and the tors system instead of pluging them just conect all the wires and leave it that way.

any one looking for sled parts check out http://www.smartrecparts.com they have about every thing from new to old!
