I just read, and replied to a thread that really "erks" me. One of our fellow SF riders was out this weekend riding on closed trails in IL. It bothers me because he could very well be one of those whining next year when the landowner won't allow trails on his land. Is it just me here, or is this clown making ALL of us look bad?? This year was awesome, don't spoil it for next year!!!!!!!!

actually the trails were opened for this last snow we had on friday. only open on friday night and then closed again by saturday morning. the club presidents opened them. And before you go saying that the season was over for us, I called The McHenry County trail report to find out when i got home from work Friday night.

I realize that the trails may have opened for a day, but this guy was out riding late Saturday. I just don't want any grief between land owners and sledders. I'd like to know that I can ride south into IL and enjoy the trails there also. We had a great year with more than ample opportunity to ride, I just think it's finally over with for the year. The ground is softening up on top and the frost is quickly coming out, leaving lots of opportunity for damage. Just call it a year guys, and hope for the best for next season.

Real smart...have some common sense and know if the trails are ridable. I will not ride on them if the snow isn't at least 4-8 inches base. Usually you can tell by all the ribbons/fences and signs that are posted up. Or just by not seeing any fresh tracks/ MUD / Grass / or anybody else out. Just going to tear up everything and screw everybody else over.

I understand that it is different here versus IL or NY. The trails close April 1st regardless if there is snow or not. The club does the trail cleanup and shelter/bridge repairs on the first weekend of april. at the same time we close and lock gates and they will not open until December 1st of next winter.

Actually, he could be charged with "trespass" for riding on a closed trail too.
As a trail boss in my club, I would make it my mission in life to track down that idiot and make sure that he was charged. It has taken me 5 years to get a twenty mile section of trail setup and open for use and I will be damned if I will allow some idiot to the cause any closure of any of it.

well the trails through mchenry county were down to mud by mid saturday and with the trails running over hay and winter wheat fields that just got totally distroyed you can all thank rottman583 when a large section of trail gets closed. My family farms and snowmobiles but when you have money invested in winter crops that get destroyed by snowmobilers that don't care I wouldn't be suprised if the trails get closed and with cocky attitudes like that I may even hope they get closed

I was going to take a short ride on saturday and was glad to see some tracks where I pick up the trail after about 4 miles of ditchbangin'. There was plenty of snow 12"to 14" plus drifting, but when I saw the trail sign that said "Trail is closed, unless there is 6" of snow and the Temperature is below 32 degrees" Well it was closer to 38 so I headed back home and played around in the ditches and my yard for an hour or so (I've got 3 acres) I put 22 miles on the sled and still had some fun. Even though there was plenty of snow I didn't want to cause any problems by being on the trails when I shouldn't. It was nice to get in one last ride.
There are ways to have fun and still obey the rules

I posted this same basic thread on another snow site I frequent daily and there is similar reaction from all of those members there too. So, Rottmann583, if you're reading these replies, you can see you're in the minority here!! Next time, do us all a favor and simply stay home. Man up and show a little respect to everyone involved in the sport. INCLUDING/ESPECIALLY the landowners.

well, just came threw the trail area, and found a kid on a 4 wheeler tearing it up in the field, I waited for him near the road, and he seen me and beat feet. I have an idea where he lives, and just contacted the land owner. Funny thing about it is,the kid on the 4 wheelers father, closed the section of trail near his property, because he doesnt want anyone on "HIS LAND", but its fine for HIS kids to tear up the endings of our season. This is the same guy, that bought a right of way, just so he could close the trail....His land is completely tore up, from 4 wheelers, and his kids use the snowmobile trail to get gas for their 4 wheeler. 2 words, SPIKE STRIPS

Im lucky, the only times trails close here is when the snow melts. Having to deal with private landowners must be a real pain.

I usually have a throw away camera in my jacket, to take pics of stuff while out riding.

This might be another good reason to carry one.

Take pics of the Sled/atv that are doing Illegal things. Should be damn good proof when you talk to the: cop/neighbor/ landowner. Hopefully get a lic.#, nothing else have a good description of the person.

If we dont start taking care of this stuff, it will be gone.
