I'm having trouble with a 1996 Arctic Cat 550 Cougar. It takes forever to start and having the choke on while doing so floods it. If I have it running and put on the choke it will stall almost every time.

While it's running it does well on packed trails but as soon as you go off into some deeper snow it starts bogging out and will eventually stall without starting again for some time. It doesn't seem to have much torque either and a heavy load (or at least more than just me on it) will make it do the same thing. I also found recently that when it is run with the throttle almost WOT it will start bogging out there too until you ease off.

I checked the plugs and there is always a thick layer of black oil on them. As far as that goes it has fouled a lot of plugs in the past before I got it. I'm not sure but I think the carbs might need adjusting and I have no clue how to do it. I checked and everything is clean. How would I go about adjusting it for better performance in deep snow and with passengers?

James007 Is hoping it doesn't rain this weekend so I can head out to the lake, relax and do some biking.

i think its your niddle pin in your carbs...if you take your slides apart and take your niddle out..at the top theres a setting on which theres like a little flat peice theres like 6 or 4 slats it goes it..thats probably whats causing your bogging in some places...now those flat things have to be equal on both side on a certain slat ..now im not sure with your sled..maybe in the manuel...if its not that could it be that your carbs aren't syncronised probably...if i am wrong someone correct me

You could just adjust the float. how does it idle. if the pin is bad it will affect the idle also. so im not 100% but I would go with the floats. some one could have changed them to get more power and messed up the intake on the carb. hope it helps. I belive if you want to get less gas you need to bend the float tab down. double check. oh and do you hold down the throttal to get her going.

nvm, if you hold the throttal it wont have spark. cats have a carb stafty switch so they dont start full throttal.

Ride a Jag z,
