hi, i am looking for ideas to speed up my system, so far i have a pentium 4 overclocked to 4.0ghz, 4gb of ram not overclocked, new motherboard, new 8800 gtx geforce with 1024 ram. new 500w power supply. i just ran a speed test for download and upload speed and im paying for 10mb but am only seeing 4.9mb. i am also running xp pro as my os. any ideas would be great. i was also thinking of upgrading to a duo core and overclocking to help with the speed. would this work?. also i have a three drives 2 internal 3.5(80gb, and 320gb) plus a 1tb external drive which will be joinnned by 2 more in the next few weeks. my computer is used for personal aswell and networked to my office server so myself and my gf can work from home a bit.
cheers

your internet speed could be a crappy signal or older modem problem. if you go to 192.168.100.1, depending on what kind of modem it is you should be able to see your signal information.
i think you have pretty much maxed out your current setup. the p4 is getting old nowadays, so a dual core would be an improvement. plus with a the new mobo and processor you would be using ddr2 which is faster. also if you get 2 like drives you could set up a raid array. that would make your programs open faster, but with 4 gigs of ram i don't think you would use to much pagefile so it probably wouldn't speed up the computer too much over all just when opening files.
only other concern is your power supply, a oc'ed p4, 88gtx and 4 hdd's are more then likely getting close to maxing out 500 watts. whats the amp spec on the +12 volt rail? i think the 88's recommend 20+ amps.

i am using ddr2 ram, not sure about the power requirments but running a system test showed me only using 74% of my 500w while testing. i kinda figured the pentium is holding back a little. can someone explain a raid setup for me have not clue what that is. only that my drive are sata's.
cheers

Your computer speed has nothing to do with your download/internet speed. I have 4 PCs in this house of varied ages (two are dual core) and they all get the same download when tested, even via wireless). Sounds like your paying for 10 Meg service and not getting it.

what chip do you have? i though you meant you had an older p4.
a raid works in a few ways, or modes.
raid 0, striping, which means data is distributed across the all of the drives. so a pieces of a file is on all drives which makes reading a writing alot faster. only problem is that if one drive dies you are sol you lost all your data.
raid 1 is mirrored, basically you get two copies of the data, so if a drive dies you dont lose anything, but there is no performance gains.
raid 5 is stripping with parity. this way you get the performance gains of striping but also have the ability to "rebuild" a failed drive. what happens is a back up copy is striped on the other drives. only bad par is that you do lose some storage capacity per drive due to the parity.
there is a crap load more types of raid configs, this link has alot of info

I dont' know if this effects you or not but we had to step up to serious speed here at work for communication between our CAD system and the network server. 1.0 Gbps hubs, fiberoptic lines, and 1.0 Gbps cards installed in our computers.
Maybe your ethernet card is effecting your performance? Them are 10/100 right? Sp I guess since you have 10/100 capability I guess thats not the problem.
I guess that was a worthless post from me.
