HEY EVERYONE, OBVIOUSLY BY LOOKING AT MY PROFILE I'M NEW HERE, BUT I'D LIKE A LITTLE HELP AND IF AT ALL POSSIBLE I COULD HELP ALL OF YOU OUT AS WELL. HERE'S MY SITUATION...

I BOUGHT A '98 XC 600 THIS YEAR AND HAD A BLAST, JUST UNDER 2000 MILES STARTING HALF WAY THROUGH THE YEAR. WHEN EVER MY BUDDIES ARE BEHIND ME, THEY COMPLAIN ABOUT HOW SMOKEY AND SMELLY MY SLED IS. I RUN POLARIS SYNTHETIC, PREMIUM FUEL, AND PUT IN BRAND NEW PLUGS. THE SLED RUNS AWESOME AND HAS A TON OF POWER, EVEN THOUGH IT'S JUST GONE OVER 7000 MILES. MY QUESTIONS ARE, DO I GO AHEAD AND THROW IN A NEW TOP END, DOES THE OIL PUMP JUST NEED TO BE ADJUSTED, OR COULD THERE BE SOMETHING ELSE WRONG?

MABEY I SHOULD ELABORATE MORE ON WHAT THE PROBLEM IS... THE SLED ALWAYS STARTS ON NO MORE THAN 4 PULLS AND ALWAYS IDLES GREAT, NO PROBLEMS THERE, BUT ALWAYS SMOKES... BAD. I'VE WATCHED MY BUDDIES TAKE IT FOR A RIP THROUGH THE FIELDS, AND I'VE NOTICED IT BLOWS OUT A BLACKISH-BROWN CLOUD. MY THOUGHTS ARE THAT IT JUST NEEDS A TOP END, BUT I'M NOT SURE.

ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

does it seem doggy at all ? like when you take off or really hammer on it? if it does then i would say you got to turn your oiler screws so it doesnt let so much oil in. And im just throwing this out. if you mix your gas and oil it will smoke like a SOB also.

NO IT DOESN'T BOG DOWN AT ALL, ONCE IT'S WARMED UP, IT DOESN'T WANT TO STOP SHREDDING TRAILS. IT SMOKES WHILE DOING IT THOUGH.

sounds that the oil pump need adjustment. Did ya loose coolant? Check the plugs color. You can also check the oil pump adjustment, the little notches need to be aligned at idle with the mark on the pump.

I WILL CHECK AND LOOK FOR THE LITTLE "NOTCHES" I THINK YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT ON THE OIL PUMP. IS THERE AN INDICATOR ON THE SET SCREWS THAT SHOULD POINT TO THE AFOREMENTIONED NOTCHES?

I STILL HAVE IT IN MY MIND THAT I WANT TO REPLACE THE TOP END THOUGH. I FOUND A WISECO XC 600 TOP END REBUILD KIT W/ GASKETS FOR JUST UNDER $200. ALTHOUGH I ALSO DOWNLOADED POLARIS' REBUILD MANUAL FOR 96-98 AND GOT READING... SOUNDS LIKE QUITE THE PROJECT. ANY SUGGESTIONS? I JUST WANT THIS SLED TO SHINE. I'M WILLING TO THROW SOME MONEY INTO IT, BECAUSE I LOVE RIDING IT, BUT THE DUDE I BOUGHT IT FROM NEVER COVERED IT WHILE IT SAT OUTSIDE FOR THE PAST FEW YEARS. I KNOW IT HAS POTENTIAL, IT JUST NEEDS A LITTLE TLC. I'LL TRY TO POST SOME PICS LATER, BUT RIGHT NOW I'M PRIMARILY CONCERNED WITH GETTING THE MOTOR BACK INTO PRIME SHAPE.

THANKS FOR THE REPLIES SO FAR EVERYONE.

yes try adjusting the pump if its off,but it is a 2 stroke and they do smoke because thats the nature of a 2 stroke, they burn the oil as its injected into the engine for lubrication, unlike a 4 stroke where that has a sump and a total different lube system.I have a 98 xc6 and it smokes a lil bit also.So try adjusting the pump and jetting it down 2 sizes from stock if that hasnt been done, and add a boost bottle, that will help clean up the idle and bottom end a bit.If youre interested in any more reliable performance upgrades just PM me and ill steer ya in the right direction.

*98 XC600 and some RMK add ons
*98 XCR440 and some SKS add ons
*Some old 70s Chappral Firebird with a 1 lunger Fuji,15mph downhill on ice with a 14 mph tailwind,AND ITS FOR SALE FOR SALE!!!
*new edition to the fam.83 Polaris Star 250.givin it some TLC for the lil guys to ride
