Just picked up a '86 Polaris Indy as my first sled! The paint job is white with some nasty decals. The white color makes it hard for others to see me - would really like to do some flames or something to spice it up! The hood is in ok shape but has a few cracks I should fill before the repaint. I have not worked with fiberglass to much- anyone have any suggestions on sanding- type of primer- and good airbrushing paint for fiberglass? Thanks for your time and feedback.

i just finished repainting my hood..i didn't prime it...just sand it down really good till its all smooth and dont see any shinny spots..but you can prime it if you want...and to not make things complicated and costly..id just paint it a solid colour.

Flames are always fun in my book...
I had a helping-hand in this one. You'd have to PM member RMK-KING to get the just of how it was painted though.

Start with a 320 grade sandpaper, then move to a 400, then primer it with a $3.50 can ( buy 2 just in case, because you have to get every last spot ), can of Krylon H2o. Then paint it with Krylon Acrylic solid color. Cheap, and looks good.

Your recomending to paint your sled with latex paint? Its a waterbased paint and is not suitable for a sled. This is possibly some of the worst advice I have seen you give. I feel sorry for anybody you have given this advice to and actualy has gone through with it.
There is no reason to re-prime it. The new layer of paint will bond with the top coat already in place if you rough it up w/ some 400 grit wet/dry. Use a tack cloth and some laquer thinner to remove the sanding dust and you will be ready to paint. Any one step automotive style paint will work but flex additive should used with it. If you want to go with a cheaper route Krylon Fusion is a good durable paint with a flex additive already in it. The only downside is its not and incredably shiny paint. White looks great but most of the other colors will be kinda dull. It can be shined up a bit with a teflon wax but buffing it is not recomended.
